About This Treatment

What is Lip Flip?

A Lip Flip is a neurotoxin injection technique that targets the orbicularis oris muscle — the circular muscle that surrounds your mouth. A small, precise amount of neurotoxin is placed along the upper lip border, which relaxes that muscle just enough to let the lip gently roll outward. The result is a subtle increase in visible lip surface without adding any volume underneath.

Unlike lip filler, a Lip Flip does not add fullness in the traditional sense. It works with the lip you already have, making it appear slightly larger or more defined — especially when you smile. Patients often describe it as their lips looking like the “best version of themselves.”

At Express Med Spa, every Lip Flip is performed by a licensed nurse practitioner or supervised clinical professional. Your provider will assess your lip shape and muscle anatomy at the start of your appointment to confirm the treatment is appropriate for your goals. The injection itself typically takes under 10 minutes.

Who I'ts For

Good Candidates? Is This Right for You?

The Lip Flip is a good fit for patients who want a more defined or slightly fuller upper lip without the commitment or cost of dermal filler. It works particularly well for patients with a thin upper lip that disappears when they smile, those who want a subtle refresh rather than a dramatic change, or those who are new to lip treatments and want to start conservatively. It is not a replacement for lip filler — patients who want significant added volume will be better served by Lip Filler Augmentation. Your provider will help you determine which approach — or combination — is right for you at your consultation.

Contraindications & Risks / Side Effects

Contraindications
Active infection, cold sore (herpes labialis), or open wound at or near the lip area.
Pregnancy or breastfeeding, consult your provider before booking any neurotoxin treatment.
Known allergy or hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin or any of its components.
Neuromuscular conditions such as myasthenia gravis, Eaton-Lambert syndrome, or amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Use of aminoglycoside antibiotics (e.g., gentamicin) within 2 weeks of treatment, which may potentiate neurotoxin effect.
Active dental work, oral surgery, or significant dental procedure scheduled within 2 weeks post-treatment.

Risks / Side Effects

Mild redness, swelling, or pinpoint bruising at the injection site — typically resolves within 24–48 hours.
Temporary asymmetry as the neurotoxin takes effect; the lips may appear slightly uneven for a few days before settling.
Temporary difficulty with certain lip movements (whistling, using a straw, playing wind instruments) during the active treatment window.
Drooping of the upper lip if too many units are placed or if placement is not anatomically precise, this resolves as the neurotoxin wears off.
Incomplete or uneven results; a follow-up assessment at 2 weeks is recommended.
