Acne Scar Treatment

If past breakouts have left scars, professional treatment can make a real, lasting difference in how your skin looks and feels. At Express Med Spa, our nurse practitioners treat acne scars with microneedling, sublative radiofrequency microneedling, and chemical peels, matched to your scar type. We will be honest with you about results: the right plan can significantly improve acne scars over a series of treatments, but no treatment erases them completely, and some deep scars are better served by a dermatologist. Every plan begins with a free consultation with Stefanie Drozd, MSN, APRN.

RESULTS TIMELINE

Improvement appears gradually as new collagen forms over the weeks and months after treatment. Most people need a series of sessions spaced several weeks apart.

Result Last

A well-matched series significantly softens and blurs scars; occasional maintenance helps hold the results. No treatment erases acne scars completely.

BEST FOR

Rolling and boxcar acne scars, mixed textured scarring, and the post-acne marks and discoloration that often accompany scars

How do acne scar treatments actually reduce scars?

True acne scars are indentations left after a breakout damages collagen. Treatments like microneedling and radiofrequency microneedling create controlled micro-injuries that trigger your skin to build fresh collagen, gradually filling and smoothing the scar from below. Chemical peels resurface the top layer to soften texture and fade the dark marks acne leaves.

What treatments are used for acne scars?

We use three main tools. Microneedling rebuilds collagen to lift indented scars; sublative radiofrequency microneedling adds heat energy to reach deeper, more stubborn scarring; and chemical peels resurface the surface to smooth texture and fade discoloration. Most plans combine collagen-building treatments with peels for both depth and tone.

Microneedling vs. chemical peel for acne scars

They fix different problems. Microneedling and radiofrequency microneedling rebuild collagen to raise indented scars, so they are the choice for pitted, rolling, or boxcar scarring. Chemical peels resurface the surface, so they are better for rough texture and the brown or red marks acne leaves. Many people get the best result by combining them.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

How many sessions will I need, and can acne scars go away completely?

Because scar treatments rebuild collagen gradually, most people need a series of about three to six sessions spaced several weeks apart, with results building over months as new collagen forms. Honestly, indented scars can be dramatically improved but rarely erased 100 percent; the realistic goal is smoother, more even skin that looks and feels far better.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

What happens at an acne scar treatment visit?

After numbing cream, your provider passes the microneedling or radiofrequency device over the scarred areas, or applies a peel, in a visit that usually runs about 45 to 60 minutes. Most people have redness like a mild sunburn for a day or two afterward. It is comfortable, low-downtime, and done by a nurse practitioner.

    About This Treatment

Acne scars form when a breakout damages the skin's deeper structure, so treating them means rebuilding collagen and resurfacing the texture, not just fading a mark. The cards below cover how acne scar treatment works, the options we use, and what results to expect, with the full guide further down the page.

Who Acne Scar Treatment is For

Good Candidates? Is This Right for You?

Who these treatments help most. Boxcar and rolling scars respond best to our in-office treatments, because they rebuild collagen under the indentation to gradually fill and smooth the texture. Surface texture and the post-acne marks and discoloration that come with healing acne improve with chemical peels, which pair well with collagen treatments.

When another path may fit better. Icepick scars are the most stubborn and often need a dermatologist for options such as subcision, TCA CROSS, or laser resurfacing. Deep, widespread, or severe scarring is also best handled by a dermatologist. If that is the better path for your skin, we will tell you honestly at your free consultation.

Contraindications & Risks / Side Effects

      Contraindications
Active acne breakouts in the treatment area - it is usually best to get active acne under control first so new breakouts do not create new scars.
Pregnancy or breastfeeding (discuss with your provider at your consultation).
Active skin infection, open wound, or inflamed skin in the treatment area.
A history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring (discussed at your consultation).
Deep icepick scarring or severe scarring that may be better served by a dermatologist.

      Risks / Side Effects

Temporary redness, swelling, or sensitivity in the treated area after microneedling or a peel.
Flaking or peeling of the skin following a chemical peel as the surface renews.
A small risk of pigment change, which we lower by choosing settings and peel types carefully, especially for darker skin tones.
Results build gradually over a series; a single session does not erase scars.

Avoid sun exposure and tanning before your appointment.
Pause retinoids and other strong actives ahead of treatment if your provider advises it.

Protect the treated skin with daily sun protection while it heals and renews.
Follow your provider's aftercare for any redness, flaking, or peeling.
Allow the spacing your provider recommends between sessions so collagen can rebuild.
Keep active acne under control between visits so new breakouts do not create new scars.

      • How Acne Scar Treatment Works: Rebuilding Collagen Under the Scar

To treat acne scars effectively, it helps to know what they are. A true acne scar is not a stain on the surface; it is an indentation left behind when a breakout damaged the collagen structure under the skin. That is why creams alone rarely fix them, since the problem sits below the surface.

The treatments that work reduce scars by rebuilding that lost collagen. Microneedling and sublative radiofrequency microneedling create thousands of tiny, controlled micro-injuries in the skin, which switches on your body’s natural repair response and prompts it to lay down fresh collagen and elastin. Over a series of sessions, that new collagen gradually fills in and smooths the indentation from below, a process often called collagen induction.

Chemical peels work in a complementary way, resurfacing the top layers to soften rough texture and fade the flat brown or red marks, known as post-inflammatory pigmentation, that acne often leaves. Our NPs explain the evidence behind this in their guide, does microneedling work for acne scars. Every treatment at Express Med Spa is performed by a licensed nurse practitioner.

      • The Treatments We Use: Microneedling, RF Microneedling, and Peels

Acne scarring is rarely just one thing, so we match the tool to the type of scar and often combine them:

        • Microneedling rebuilds collagen to lift and smooth indented scars, and is a workhorse for rolling and boxcar scarring and general texture.
        • Sublative radiofrequency microneedling adds radiofrequency heat to the micro-needling, delivering energy deeper into the skin to reach more stubborn or deeper scars.
        • Chemical peels resurface the upper layers to smooth roughness and fade the brown and red marks left after breakouts, and they pair well with collagen treatments.

Indented scars improve most from the collagen-building treatments because they rebuild volume under the scar, while surface texture and discoloration improve most with resurfacing. Combining the two is usually the most effective approach, and your nurse practitioner will design the mix at your consultation.

      • Microneedling vs. Chemical Peel vs. RF Microneedling

The most common question we hear is whether to choose microneedling or a chemical peel. The honest answer is that they solve different problems, and the best choice depends on what your scarring actually looks like.

Microneedling and RF microneedling work in the deeper layers to rebuild collagen, so they are the right tools for indented scars, the pitted, rolling, and boxcar texture that sits below the surrounding skin. Radiofrequency microneedling adds heat to reach deeper, making it useful for more stubborn scarring that plain microneedling has not fully resolved.

Chemical peels work at the surface, so they are strongest on rough texture and on the flat brown or red discoloration that lingers after a breakout heals. Because most people have a mix of indentation and discoloration, the best plan is often a combination, using collagen-building sessions for depth and peels for tone. Your NP will map the sequence to your skin at your visit.

      • How Many Sessions, and What Results to Expect

Acne scar treatment rewards patience, because it works with your body’s own collagen-building timeline. Most people need a series of roughly three to six sessions spaced several weeks apart, and the results keep developing for months after each session as new collagen matures.

Here is the honest part we tell every patient: true indented acne scars can be dramatically improved, but they are very rarely erased 100 percent. Any clinic promising to completely remove deep scars in one session is overpromising. What is realistic, and what most people are thrilled with, is skin that is noticeably smoother and more even, with scars that are shallower and far less noticeable in everyday light.

One thing that matters for timing: if you are still actively breaking out, it is usually best to get the acne itself under control first, because new breakouts can create new scars. Our acne treatment is designed for that step, and once your skin has calmed, scar treatment can begin in earnest.

      • What to Expect: The Visit and Downtime

An acne scar treatment visit is straightforward. For microneedling or radiofrequency microneedling, we first apply a numbing cream so you are comfortable, then pass the device over the scarred areas so the tiny needles can do their work. For a chemical peel, the solution is applied and neutralized in the office. Most visits run about 45 to 60 minutes including numbing time.

Downtime is short and predictable. After microneedling, most people have redness and a feeling like a mild sunburn for one to two days, and after a peel the skin may flake lightly for a few days as it renews. You can usually return to normal activities the next day, and we will give you simple aftercare instructions to protect the results.

Every treatment at Express Med Spa is performed by a licensed nurse practitioner, at our locations in Frankfort, La Grange, Shorewood, and Mount Greenwood, easy to reach from across the Chicago southwest suburbs, including the Naperville area. At your consultation we will confirm the right plan for your scars and your skin.
