Sublative RF Microneedling in Chicagoland

Sublative radiofrequency microneedling is a resurfacing treatment built on energy rather than on needles alone. The applicator tip of the Sublative handpiece carries a fixed grid of 64 tiny electrode points. When your provider presses it against the skin and fires, bipolar radiofrequency energy passes between neighboring points, and each point leaves a microscopic zone of controlled injury reaching up to about 450 microns into the skin, the depth of the upper dermis where collagen is built. The zones sit in a precise grid, and the skin between them, the large majority of the surface, is left untouched.

That intact skin is the design, not a limitation. Only around five percent of the surface is affected in a pass, and the untouched skin between the points acts as a reservoir of healthy cells that repairs the treated zones quickly. Your body clears each micro-injury and rebuilds with new collagen and elastin, the structural proteins that scars and etched-in lines are short of. Fractional ablative lasers disrupt somewhere between ten and seventy percent of the surface to do similar work, which is why their recovery runs so much longer.

Two details separate Sublative from most of what a search for RF microneedling returns. First, the energy is radiofrequency only: there is no laser or light component in this applicator, and because radiofrequency does not seek out pigment, the treatment does not depend on your skin tone the way light-based resurfacing does. Second, most of the energy is delivered below the surface rather than across the top of it, which is the idea the Sublative name points to. Honestly: partly, and we would rather explain than blur it. RF microneedling is an umbrella term for any device pairing controlled skin penetration with radiofrequency, and Sublative sits at the shallow, resurfacing end of it. Devices like Morpheus8, Secret RF and Vivace insert insulated needles to a chosen depth, from half a millimeter to several millimeters, and fire energy from the needle tips down in the dermis. Sublative’s electrode points reach about 450 microns, are fixed rather than adjustable, and fire between one another near the surface. We put the device name in the page title because you deserve to know which kind you are booking, and if a deeper insertional treatment genuinely fits your goals better, your provider will say so at the consultation instead of selling you the wrong tool.

What the FDA has and has not cleared

The radiofrequency applicator behind Sublative is FDA-cleared for dermatologic procedures requiring ablation and resurfacing of the skin, and its clearance was expanded in 2010 to cover the treatment of fine lines and facial wrinkles. Acne scarring and stretch marks are a different story: improvement there is documented in published clinical studies, including trials run in medium and deep skin tones, but neither is an FDA-cleared indication in the United States, and a clinic telling you otherwise is overstating the paperwork. Each $495 session covers the full face or one body area of comparable size, so the practical first question is where your concern lives.

The face. The most common booking. Cheeks and temples carry most atrophic acne scarring, the forehead and the skin around the mouth show etched-in lines first, and the chin and jawline collect rough, uneven texture. A full-face pass treats all of it in one visit, with energy adjusted zone by zone rather than run at a single setting.

The neck and chest. Crepey, sun-exposed skin below the jaw responds to fractional radiofrequency, though it remodels more slowly than facial skin and generally needs the full series before the change is fair to judge.

Body areas. One area of similar size per session: common requests are the backs of the hands, the abdomen, or a patch of scarred or rough skin elsewhere. The published evidence for surgical scars and stretch marks is thinner than for facial resurfacing, so we frame those as case-by-case conversations at a consultation rather than promises on a page.

If more than one area bothers you, sessions are sequenced rather than stacked: most clients start with the face, judge the response at the three-month mark, and then decide whether the neck, chest or hands deserve a series of their own.

Plan on 60 to 90 minutes for the visit; the treatment itself runs about 30 to 45 minutes once your skin is numb.

Consultation and consents. Your provider reviews your medical history, medications, skincare and recent sun exposure, and confirms the plan for your skin. Two consents cover this service, a laser and energy device consent and a microneedling consent, and no separate exam visit is required before booking.

Numbing. A topical numbing cream sits on the area for 20 to 30 minutes. With it working, most people describe the pulses as warm prickling or tiny hot snaps rather than sharp pain, strongest along the jaw and hairline where bone sits close under the skin.

The passes. The applicator is placed, fired and lifted in an overlapping grid until the area is covered, with energy set to your skin tone and your concern. Higher settings go to scarred cheeks, lighter ones to thinner zones near the eyes and neck. Pinpoint bleeding at higher settings is possible and settles quickly.

Right afterwards. You will look flushed and feel warm, like a sunburn, for the rest of the day. Over the next 24 to 72 hours the treated grid darkens into fine bronzed crusts, the skin feels dry and sandpapery, and by about day five the crusts shed on their own. Most people are back at work the next day and wearing makeup within a day or two. Two different things happen on two different clocks, and separating them prevents most of the disappointment around resurfacing treatments.

The early change, two to six weeks. Once the crusts shed and the surface renews, skin usually reads smoother and brighter. This is real, and it is the smaller part of what you are paying for.

The structural change, three to six months. Collagen rebuilding is slow biology. Each session’s micro-injuries remodel over months, which is why sessions are spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart and why the honest before-and-after comparison is taken about three months after the final session, not the week after the first.

The series. Most plans run 3 to 5 sessions. Lighter texture and fine-line concerns sit at the shorter end; deeper atrophic acne scarring needs the longer end, and improvement there is measured in degrees rather than in skin that looks brand new. Deep ice pick scars respond least well to any resurfacing device and may be better served by a combined plan.

How long it holds. Results are commonly described as lasting six to twelve months, and that figure comes from general radiofrequency resurfacing experience rather than a Sublative longevity trial, so treat it as a planning number rather than a promise. Collagen loss continues with age, sun exposure and smoking, and daily SPF 30 or higher is the single habit that most protects what you paid for. Many clients book one maintenance session a year once the series is complete, which is clinic practice rather than a research finding.

Against microneedling with PRP. Microneedling with PRP keeps the mechanical needling and adds a biologic, platelet-rich plasma from your own blood, as the glide. PRP is the route people choose for overall skin quality using their own biology; Sublative is the route for energy-driven resurfacing. They solve overlapping problems by different means, and neither requires the other.

Against Sublime and RF skin tightening. Sublime is the other applicator on the same Candela elos Plus platform, and the names get confused constantly. Against deeper RF needling and the lasers. Insertional devices such as Morpheus8 reach deeper tissue and are marketed for firming and contouring; we do not offer them, and for surface texture and scarring the shallow fractional approach is the design, not a compromise. Fractional ablative lasers resurface more aggressively per session at the cost of five to ten days of downtime and a higher pigment risk in deeper skin tones.
