BEST FOR

Dull skin, rough texture, peach fuzz, flaky patches, smoother makeup application
  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

    How does dermaplaning work?

Your esthetician holds a sterile surgical blade at a 45-degree angle and draws it across the skin in short, controlled strokes. This lifts off the outermost layer of dead cells along with vellus hair, the fine peach fuzz that traps oil and dulls the surface.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

Where on the face is dermaplaning used?

The blade is passed over the forehead, cheeks, jawline, chin, and upper lip. It is not used on the eyelids, inside the nostrils, or over active blemishes, and it is not performed on the nose bridge where the angle cannot be controlled safely.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

    What happens at my appointment?

Your visit runs about 45 to 60 minutes: a full cleanse, a skin analysis, the dermaplaning pass, extractions if your skin needs them, then a soothing serum and SPF. You leave with written aftercare instructions.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

When will I see results and how long do they last?

Smoothness and brightness are visible the same day, since the dulling layer is physically removed rather than dissolved. Results hold about 3 to 4 weeks, which is roughly one skin cell turnover cycle.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

Dermaplaning vs microdermabrasion: which is right for me?

Both exfoliate the surface, but only dermaplaning removes peach fuzz. Microdermabrasion uses abrasion or suction and does not touch vellus hair. If smoother makeup application is your goal, dermaplaning is the better fit.

Who Dermaplaning Facial in Chicagoland is For

Good Candidates? Is This Right for You?

Who Is a Good Candidate for Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning suits most adult skin types, and it is one of the few resurfacing treatments appropriate for people who cannot tolerate acids or heat-based devices. It is a particularly good fit if your skin looks dull or feels rough, if foundation catches on fine facial hair, or if visible peach fuzz along the cheeks and jawline bothers you.

It is also a common choice before a wedding, photographs, or any event where makeup needs to sit perfectly, because there is no peeling phase to time around. Because dermaplaning is mechanical rather than chemical, it is generally well tolerated by sensitive skin and is safe during pregnancy, though we confirm this at your consultation.

Dermaplaning is not the right treatment during an active acne breakout. Passing a blade over inflamed lesions can spread bacteria and worsen irritation. If active or cystic acne is your primary concern, our acne treatment options are the appropriate starting point, and dermaplaning can be revisited once the skin has calmed. The same applies to an active rosacea flare.

    Concerns Dermaplaning Addresses

    • Dull, tired-looking skin lacking radiance
    • Rough or uneven surface texture
    • Visible vellus hair (peach fuzz) on the cheeks, jawline, and upper lip
    • Makeup that cakes, catches, or sits unevenly
    • Dry, flaking patches on the surface
    • Poor absorption of serums and moisturizers
    • The look of fine lines softened by surface smoothing
    • Mild, non-inflamed congestion, treated alongside extractions

    Safety Overview

Dermaplaning is a low-risk, surface-level treatment with no required downtime. At Express Med Spa it is performed by a licensed esthetician, working within the Illinois scope of practice for estheticians and under the clinical oversight of our founder, Stefanie Drozd, MSN, APRN. A fresh sterile blade is used for every client and is never reused.

Dermaplaning should be postponed or avoided if you have an active acne breakout, an active rosacea flare, an open cold sore or any broken skin in the treatment area, a current sunburn, or if you have taken isotretinoin within the past six months. Please share your full medical history, current medications, and recent treatments at your consultation. Your esthetician will confirm that dermaplaning is appropriate before any blade touches your skin, and will recommend an alternative if it is not.

I had a truly exceptional experience at Express Med Spa Lagrange. From the moment I walked in, the atmosphere was inviting, clean, and calming which was a perfect reflection of the professionalism and care that followed. The entire staff at Express Med Spa is overwhelmingly friendly and welcoming. Addy welcomes you with a fresh face and positive attitude every time I come. She even remembers the little things I tell her, which makes me feel appreciated. There’s a genuine warmth that radiates from her creating an environment that feels both professional and personal which I feel is a rare and valuable combination in the med spa space.I received both neurotoxin and filler treatments from nurse Angelika, and I cannot speak highly enough of her expertise. She took the time to listen to my concerns, clearly explained each step of the process, and delivered results that were both natural and beautifully tailored to my features. Her skill, precision, and calm demeanor immediately put me at ease and made the entire experience comfortable and reassuring. I voiced my concerns regarding my skin and was referred over to the esthetician Kaitlin who completed a complimentary skin analysis and educated me on my skin and needs. She then recommended a custom facial which was adapted to my skins texture and demands. It was truly relaxing and transformative. I am now coming in monthly to keep up with it!If you're looking for a med spa where expertise meets hospitality, I highly recommend Express Med Spa Lagrange. They’ve earned my trust and future business without question.

      What To Expect

      Pre & Post Treatment Care

      Pre-Care Instructions
Stop retinoids, retinol, and prescription vitamin A products 5 to 7 days before your appointment
Skip chemical exfoliants (AHA, BHA, glycolic, salicylic) for 3 days prior
Avoid waxing, threading, or depilatory creams on the face for 2 weeks before treatment
Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning for 1 week; do not come in with a sunburn
Wait at least 2 weeks after any chemical peel, laser treatment, or microneedling in the same area
Arrive with clean skin and no makeup where possible
Reschedule if you develop an active breakout, cold sore, or any broken skin in the treatment area
Tell your esthetician if you have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) in the past 6 months, or if you are prone to cold sores

      Post-Care Instructions

Apply SPF 30 or higher every morning; freshly exfoliated skin burns more easily
Avoid direct sun exposure for 48 to 72 hours after treatment
Pause retinoids, acids, and other active ingredients for 48 to 72 hours
Skip physical scrubs and exfoliating tools for 3 to 5 days
Avoid saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga, pools, and heavy sweating for 24 hours
Keep hands off your face and use a clean pillowcase that night
Cleanse gently and moisturize; a hydrating serum absorbs especially well now
Wait at least 1 week before waxing or threading the treated area
Rebook at 3 to 4 weeks to keep results continuous

      • How Dermaplaning Works

Dermaplaning is a manual, physical exfoliation. Your esthetician holds a sterile surgical blade at a 45-degree angle against taut skin and draws it across the surface in short, controlled strokes. Each pass lifts away two things at once: the outermost layer of dead keratinized cells, and the vellus hair most people call peach fuzz.

Removing that layer matters more than it sounds. Dead cells sit on the surface and scatter light, which is what makes skin read as dull. Vellus hair holds onto oil, makeup pigment, and everyday debris. Clearing both in one pass is why the change is visible the moment you sit up, rather than developing over days.

Because dermaplaning is mechanical rather than chemical, it does not rely on an acid to loosen the bond between cells and it does not create a controlled wound. Nothing is left on the skin to keep working after you leave, which is exactly why there is no peeling phase and no required downtime.

It also improves what you apply afterward. With the dead layer and fine hair gone, serums and moisturizers meet living skin instead of a barrier of debris, and foundation lies flat instead of catching on hair.

      • Where Dermaplaning Is Used on the Face

Dermaplaning is a facial treatment. At Express Med Spa the blade is passed over the broad, relatively flat planes of the face where the angle can be held safely and consistently:

        • Forehead: the widest flat plane and usually the first area treated.
        • Cheeks: where vellus hair is typically densest and most visible in side light.
        • Jawline and chin: where hair tends to be coarser and makeup most often catches.
        • Upper lip: treated with shorter strokes and a lighter hand.

Some areas are deliberately left alone. The blade is not used on the eyelids, inside or around the nostrils, or directly over active, inflamed blemishes. The bridge and sides of the nose are generally avoided because the curve makes a consistent 45-degree angle difficult to maintain.

Dermaplaning is also offered in two forms here. The full Dermaplaning Facial is a complete facial service that includes cleansing, skin analysis, the dermaplaning pass, extractions if needed, and a finishing serum and SPF. The Peach Fuzz Express Removal add-on is a shorter version using a coarse blade, designed to be attached to another service when hair removal rather than a full facial is the goal.

      • What to Expect at Your Dermaplaning Appointment

A dermaplaning facial at Express Med Spa runs about 45 to 60 minutes and follows the same sequence at every location.

        • Cleanse: your esthetician thoroughly removes makeup, sunscreen, oil, and debris. The skin has to be completely clean and dry for the blade to work correctly.
        • Skin analysis: your skin is examined to identify areas needing extra care and to confirm dermaplaning is appropriate that day. An active breakout or cold sore can change the plan.
        • Dermaplaning: the sterile blade is drawn across the skin at a 45-degree angle in short strokes, section by section. Most people describe it as a light scraping or brushing sensation. No numbing is needed and it should not hurt.
        • Extractions: performed if your skin needs them, which is easier and more effective once the surface layer is gone.
        • Finish: a soothing serum and SPF are applied to protect freshly exposed skin, along with complimentary skincare products.
        • Aftercare: you leave with written instructions covering sun protection and which actives to pause.

You can wear makeup out if you want to, though most people prefer not to for the rest of the day. There is no peeling phase and no recovery period to plan around.

      • How Long Dermaplaning Results Last

The smoothing and brightening are immediate. Because the dulling layer is physically lifted off rather than dissolved over time, you see and feel the change the same day rather than waiting for it to develop.

Results hold for about 3 to 4 weeks. That window is set by your own skin cell turnover cycle: as new cells rise and the old ones accumulate again, the surface gradually returns to its baseline. Vellus hair regrows on a similar timeline.

Several things shift where you land in that range:

        • Cell turnover rate: turnover slows with age, so results often last slightly longer for older clients simply because the surface rebuilds more slowly.
        • Skin type: oilier skin tends to look dull again sooner.
        • Home care: consistent sunscreen and gentle exfoliation extend the smooth phase.
        • Sun exposure: unprotected sun accelerates the return of rough, uneven texture.

Most clients rebook every 3 to 4 weeks to keep results continuous. That cadence is deliberate rather than arbitrary: treating much sooner does not give the surface layer time to rebuild, and there is no benefit to removing a layer that is not there yet.

Dermaplaning results are cumulative in the sense that regular treatment keeps skin consistently smooth, but the treatment does not permanently change your skin or your hair. Stopping simply returns you to your natural baseline.

      • Dermaplaning vs Microdermabrasion, Chemical Peels, and Shaving

All of these exfoliate. They are not interchangeable, and the right choice depends on what is actually bothering you.

        • Dermaplaning vs microdermabrasion: microdermabrasion exfoliates through abrasion or suction and does not remove vellus hair at all. Dermaplaning removes both dead cells and peach fuzz in one pass. If smoother makeup application is the goal, dermaplaning is the better tool. Our full dermaplaning vs microdermabrasion comparison covers this in more depth.
        • Dermaplaning vs a chemical peel: a chemical peel uses acids to work below the surface, targeting pigment, acne, and sun damage, and typically involves visible peeling. Dermaplaning is strictly surface-level with no downtime. Peels treat discoloration; dermaplaning treats texture and dullness.
        • Dermaplaning vs shaving: a razor is designed to cut hair with skin protection built in. A dermaplaning blade is held at a specific angle by a trained hand to lift the dead cell layer as well, which a razor is not built to do.
        • Dermaplaning vs laser hair removal: if your goal is permanently reducing unwanted hair rather than exfoliating, laser hair removal is the appropriate treatment. Dermaplaning removes peach fuzz temporarily as part of an exfoliation service.

These treatments also stack well. Dermaplaning is frequently paired with a chemical peel or an aqua facial, because clearing the surface layer first lets the second treatment reach the skin more evenly. Your esthetician will sequence them appropriately in one visit.

      • Where to Get Dermaplaning Near You
