Mild to moderate skin laxity on the jawline and neck, early jowling, crepey texture, loose skin on the body

How does RF skin tightening work?

Radiofrequency energy heats the dermis, the living layer under the surface. That heat makes existing collagen contract straight away and signals your fibroblasts to build new collagen over the following weeks. We use the Sublime applicator on the FDA-cleared Candela elos Plus, which pairs infrared light with bi-polar radiofrequency.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

What areas can RF skin tightening treat?

The jawline, jowls, neck, cheeks, around the eyes, forehead, and decolletage on the face, and the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and upper arms on the body. Sublime Laser Neck and Jowl Contouring targets the lower face and neck specifically; body work runs through our body contouring service.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

What happens at an RF skin tightening appointment?

Expect 30 to 60 minutes. Your provider cleanses the area, applies coupling gel, and moves the applicator in slow overlapping passes while the dermis warms. Most people describe it as a deep, comfortable heat. You leave slightly flushed, and that settles within a few hours. No downtime is required.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

How soon will I see results, and how long do they last?

There is a mild tightening the same day, but the real change builds as new collagen forms and peaks around 2 to 3 months. Results from a completed series generally hold for 12 to 18 months, and most clients maintain them with a session every 3 to 6 months. Results vary between individuals.

How is Sublime different from Sublative RF or a thread lift?

Sublime is non-ablative and treats laxity. Sublative is fractional and resurfaces, so it is the better choice for acne scarring and deep texture. A PDO thread lift physically repositions tissue, which radiofrequency cannot do. If the jawline has genuinely descended, a thread lift or surgery is the more honest answer.

Who RF Skin Tightening in Chicagoland is For

Good Candidates? Is This Right for You?

Who Is a Good Candidate for RF Skin Tightening?

RF skin tightening suits adults with mild to moderate skin laxity who want a firmer jawline, neck, or body contour without surgery and without time away from work. It works most predictably on skin that has started to lose its snap but has not yet dropped significantly: typically from the mid-thirties onward, when collagen production has slowed but the underlying structure is still largely intact.

Because radiofrequency targets tissue resistance rather than pigment, it is appropriate for all skin tones, including deeper skin types that are not candidates for many light-based devices. It is also a reasonable option if you have tried topical firming products and found them insufficient, which most people do, since a cream cannot reach the dermis where the change has to happen.

You are a good candidate if you are prepared to complete a series rather than judge the treatment on one session, and if your expectation is a natural, gradual firming rather than a dramatic single-visit change. If you want a visible lift by a fixed date, tell us at consultation and we will discuss whether a PDO thread lift fits your timeline better.

    Concerns RF Skin Tightening Addresses

    • Mild to moderate skin laxity along the jawline and under the chin
    • Early jowling and softening jaw definition
    • Crepey texture on the neck and decolletage
    • Horizontal neck lines
    • Fine lines and general loss of firmness on the face
    • Loose skin and cellulite dimpling on the abdomen, thighs, and arms
    • Skin that looks thinner or less resilient than it used to

    Safety and Who Should Wait

RF skin tightening is well tolerated and side effects are usually limited to a few hours of redness and warmth. It is not appropriate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have an implanted pacemaker, defibrillator, or other electronic device, because radiofrequency energy can interfere with them. Tell us about any metal implant, plate, or permanent filler in the area you want treated.

We will also postpone treatment over active infection, an open wound, inflamed acne, or a cold sore in the treatment area, and if you have taken isotretinoin within the past six months. A history of keloid scarring, uncontrolled diabetes, or an autoimmune condition that affects wound healing needs a conversation first. Your provider reviews all of this at your consultation, which is required before treatment.

      • How RF Skin Tightening Works

Radiofrequency skin tightening works by heating the dermis, the living layer of skin that sits beneath the surface and holds your collagen and elastin. The device passes radiofrequency energy through the skin and the tissue’s own resistance turns that energy into heat, warming the dermis while the surface stays comfortable.

That heat does two separate things. The first is immediate: collagen is a coiled protein, and when it reaches a therapeutic temperature it contracts, so the skin reads as slightly firmer as soon as you sit up. The second takes longer and matters more. Controlled heat signals fibroblasts, the cells that manufacture collagen and elastin, to start building new fibers. That rebuilding runs quietly for weeks after each session, which is why the result you see at three months is better than the one you see on the day.

At Express Med Spa we perform this with the Sublime applicator on the FDA-cleared Candela elos Plus platform. Sublime is an elos treatment, meaning it combines two energies rather than one: infrared light warms the upper dermis, and bi-polar radiofrequency reaches deeper to remodel the collagen scaffold. Pairing them lets the device reach treatment temperature at a lower, gentler setting than either energy would need alone.

Because radiofrequency targets water and tissue resistance rather than pigment, it does not care what colour your skin is. That is the practical reason Sublime is appropriate across all skin tones, while several light-based treatments are not. It also removes nothing from the surface, so there is no peeling phase and no wound to heal. If you want the longer explainer on the platform itself, our guide to Sublime skin tightening covers the technology in more depth.

      • Areas We Treat With RF Skin Tightening

Radiofrequency is used across the face, neck, and body, and the applicator and settings change with the area. The flagship service, Sublime Laser Neck and Jowl Contouring, is aimed squarely at the lower face and neck, because that is where mild laxity shows first and where a non-surgical option is most often asked for.

        Face and neck

        • Jawline and jowls: where softening definition along the mandible is the goal
        • Neck: horizontal neck lines, crepey texture, and early slackness under the chin
        • Cheeks and midface: support for skin that has begun to descend
        • Around the eyes: fine crow’s feet and mild under-eye laxity, treated at a lower setting
        • Forehead: fine lines and surface texture
        • Decolletage: the chest, where sun exposure thins the skin early

        Body

        • Abdomen and flanks: loose skin and the dimpling of cellulite
        • Thighs and buttocks: skin firmness and surface smoothness
        • Upper arms: crepey skin above the elbow

Body work runs through our body contouring service rather than the Sublime facial applicator, and pairs radiofrequency with ultrasound cavitation, lymphatic massage, and LED in one appointment. Face and body are quoted separately because the surface area and the session count are different.

Radiofrequency is also frequently added onto a facial as a finishing step. That add-on treats the full face at a lighter intensity and is the least expensive way to see how your skin responds to heat before committing to a Sublime series.

      • What Your RF Skin Tightening Appointment Is Like

A Sublime session runs about 30 to 60 minutes depending on how much area you are treating. Nothing about it requires anaesthetic, sedation, or a driver, and most people book it over a lunch hour.

Your provider starts by cleansing the area and removing all makeup, sunscreen, and lotion, because anything left on the skin changes how energy is delivered. You put on protective eyewear. A thin layer of coupling gel goes down so the applicator glides and stays in even contact.

Then the treatment itself: your provider moves the handpiece over the area in slow, overlapping passes, watching the skin’s response and checking your comfort as the temperature builds. Most people describe it as a deep, spreading warmth, similar to a hot stone massage, with an occasional brief hot spot over bone. It is a sensation you can talk through. If it becomes sharp rather than warm, say so, and the setting comes down.

Your provider will usually make several passes over the same area to bring the dermis to and hold it at treatment temperature, since it is sustained heat rather than a single hot pass that triggers collagen remodeling. Afterwards the gel is removed and moisturizer and SPF go on. Your skin will look flushed, roughly like mild windburn, and that settles within a few hours. There is no dressing, no peeling, and no reason you cannot go straight back to work or out that evening. Makeup can go on the same day.

Most plans run a series of 4 to 6 sessions spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart, then a maintenance session every few months. Your provider confirms your own number at consultation, because it depends on how much laxity you are starting with.

      • When You See Results and How Long They Last

Radiofrequency has an unusual results curve, and knowing its shape in advance is the difference between being pleased and being impatient.

The same day: a mild tightening from collagen contracting under heat. It is real and it is visible, but it is modest, and some of it eases off over the following days as the initial swelling settles. Do not judge the treatment on this.

Weeks 4 to 8: new collagen begins to reach the point where it changes how the skin sits. This is usually when people close to you start commenting without being able to say what changed.

Months 2 to 3: the peak of the response, and the point at which a before photo becomes genuinely useful. Firmness along the jaw and under the chin is typically where the difference reads most clearly.

Results from a completed series generally hold for about 12 to 18 months. What radiofrequency cannot do is stop the clock: your skin keeps ageing on its own schedule, so the collagen you build is added to a baseline that continues to decline. Most clients keep their result with a maintenance session every 3 to 6 months rather than repeating the full series.

How long your own result lasts depends on where you started, your age, sun exposure, whether you smoke, and how consistent you are with daily SPF. Results vary between individuals, and your provider will give you a realistic expectation at your consultation rather than a promise.

      • Sublime RF Compared With Our Other Firming Options

Radiofrequency is one of several ways to address loose skin, and they are not interchangeable. The honest version is that they do different things, and the amount of laxity you are starting with decides which is appropriate. Each one suits a different job.

        Sublime RF versus Sublative RF

Both run on the same Candela elos Plus platform, which causes a lot of confusion. Sublime is non-ablative: it heats the dermis through an intact surface to tighten and firm. Sublative delivers fractional radiofrequency through a matrix of tiny points that create controlled micro-injuries, so it resurfaces, and it is the stronger choice for acne scarring, deep texture, and etched lines. Sublime is the laxity treatment; Sublative is the texture treatment. Sublative also carries a few days of visible micro-crusting, where Sublime does not.

Sublime RF versus a PDO thread lift

Radiofrequency improves skin quality and produces a subtle firming. It does not reposition tissue. If the jawline has genuinely descended, heat will not lift it back, and a PDO thread lift that mechanically repositions the tissue is the more honest answer. The two are also commonly sequenced, with radiofrequency used to improve skin quality around a lift.

        Sublime RF versus microneedling

Both build collagen, by different routes. Microneedling works mechanically and is stronger on scarring, pores, and surface texture; radiofrequency works thermally and is stronger on laxity and firmness. Neither is a replacement for the other, and many treatment plans alternate them.

When surgery is the right answer

Radiofrequency treats mild to moderate laxity. If there is significant loose skin or a well-defined jowl, no non-surgical device will match what a surgical lift achieves, and we will tell you that at consultation rather than sell you a series that cannot deliver.
