Underarm Botox for Excessive Sweating (Axillary Hyperhidrosis)

Excessive underarm sweating, known medically as axillary hyperhidrosis, can soak through shirts no matter how much antiperspirant you use. At Express Med Spa, our licensed nurse practitioners treat it with Botox, the neurotoxin FDA-approved to calm overactive underarm sweat glands, in a quick in-office visit with no required downtime. Most patients enjoy dramatically drier underarms for four to six months per treatment.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

How does Botox stop underarm sweating?

Botox blocks the nerve signals that switch on your underarm sweat glands. With those signals interrupted, the treated glands stop overproducing sweat for several months.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

Where on the body is this treatment used?

It targets the underarms, the most common site of excessive sweating. Botox is placed in a grid of small injections across each underarm.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

    What happens during the appointment?

Your visit takes about 15 to 30 minutes. After optional numbing, your injector places a series of quick, shallow injections across each underarm, and you head home the same day.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

When will I stop sweating, and how long does it last?

Most people notice drier underarms within 2 to 4 days, with full results by about two weeks. Relief typically lasts 4 to 6 months before a repeat visit is needed.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

How is Botox different from antiperspirants or other options?

Unlike clinical antiperspirants you reapply daily or oral medications with body-wide side effects, underarm Botox quiets only the treated sweat glands for months. Express Med Spa uses Botox, the neurotoxin FDA-approved for underarm sweating.

Who Underarm Botox for Excessive Sweating (Axillary Hyperhidrosis) is For

Good Candidates? Is This Right for You?

Who Is a Good Candidate for Underarm Botox?

Underarm Botox is a strong option for adults whose excessive underarm sweating is not controlled by regular or clinical-strength antiperspirants. If you change shirts during the day, deal with visible sweat marks and staining, or find that sweating affects your work, wardrobe, or confidence, you may be a good candidate. It is best suited to primary axillary hyperhidrosis, meaning underarm sweating that is not caused by another medical condition or medication.

Botox is a temporary treatment, so it is a good match if you are comfortable repeating it every 4 to 6 months to maintain results. Your nurse practitioner confirms your candidacy at a free consultation.

    Concerns Underarm Botox Addresses

    • Sweat soaking through shirts regardless of antiperspirant use
    • Visible underarm sweat marks and clothing stains
    • Self-consciousness about raising your arms or sweating in social and work settings
    • Antiperspirants that irritate the skin or stop working
    • Restricting clothing choices or colors to hide sweating
    • Severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis that has not responded to topical treatment

    Safety Overview

Botox has a long, established safety record and has been FDA-approved for severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis since 2004. At Express Med Spa, all injections are performed by licensed nurse practitioners and registered nurses with injectable training, and are never delegated to unlicensed staff.

Please share your full medical history, current medications, and supplements at your consultation. If your sweating came on suddenly, occurs mostly at night, or affects your whole body, it may be secondary hyperhidrosis linked to another cause, which should be evaluated before treatment. Some conditions and medications require closer review before Botox can be safely administered.

        • How Underarm Botox Stops Excessive Sweating

Sweating is triggered when nerves release a chemical messenger called acetylcholine, which tells your eccrine sweat glands to produce sweat. In people with axillary hyperhidrosis, those signals fire far more than the body needs, leaving the underarms wet even when it is cool and you are at rest.

Underarm Botox works by blocking the release of acetylcholine at the treated sweat glands. Once that signal is interrupted, the glands in the injected area stop overproducing sweat. The effect is local and temporary: only the treated underarm glands are quieted, so the rest of your body continues to sweat and regulate temperature normally. As the Botox gradually wears off over several months, the nerve signals return and the treatment is simply repeated.

This is the same botulinum toxin type A used for cosmetic wrinkle treatment, applied to a different target. For severe underarm sweating specifically, it is an FDA-approved use rather than an off-label one.

        • Underarm Botox Treatment Areas

This page covers Botox for the underarms, or axillae, which are the most common site of focal excessive sweating and the area the FDA has approved Botox to treat. During your appointment, your injector maps each underarm and places a grid of small, evenly spaced injections just under the skin so the medication reaches the overactive sweat glands across the whole area.

The standard treatment uses about 50 units of Botox per underarm, or roughly 100 units total for both sides, delivered as a series of tiny injections per side. Some providers first use a simple starch-iodine test that turns the most active sweat zones dark, which helps target the injections precisely.

Botox is also used off-label for sweating in other areas such as the palms, soles, and scalp. Those areas are handled case by case, so mention them at your consultation if they affect you as well.

        • What to Expect at Your Underarm Botox Appointment

An underarm Botox visit is quick and done entirely in-office, usually in about 15 to 30 minutes. Your injector begins by cleaning the underarms and, if helpful, marking the treatment area or running a quick starch-iodine test to highlight the most active zones.

To keep you comfortable, ice or a topical numbing cream can be applied first. Your injector then delivers a series of shallow injections with a very fine needle across each underarm. Most patients describe the sensation as small pinches rather than significant pain. Because the injections are just under the skin, there is no need for stitches or recovery time.

When the injections are finished, you can return to your normal day right away, with only a few simple aftercare steps such as skipping the gym and antiperspirant for the rest of the day. All treatments at Express Med Spa are performed by licensed nurse practitioners and registered nurses with injectable training.

        • When You'll See Results and How Long Underarm Botox Lasts

Most patients begin to notice their underarms getting drier within 2 to 4 days after treatment, with the full effect setting in by about one to two weeks. Clinical studies of Botox for axillary hyperhidrosis report reductions in underarm sweating of roughly 80 percent or more for most patients.

Relief typically lasts about 4 to 6 months, and sometimes longer, before the sweat glands gradually reactivate and symptoms return. Sweating often responds a little longer than cosmetic Botox in the face. When you notice the effect fading, the treatment is simply repeated to maintain results.

Because results build over about two weeks and last for months, many patients schedule treatment a few weeks ahead of summer, a wedding, a big presentation, or another event where staying dry matters most.

        • Underarm Botox vs. Antiperspirants and Other Sweat Treatments

Clinical-strength antiperspirants that contain aluminum chloride are usually the first thing to try, but they have to be reapplied constantly and can irritate the skin, and for many people with hyperhidrosis they simply are not strong enough. Prescription oral medications can reduce sweating throughout the body, but because they work everywhere they can cause side effects like dry mouth, blurred vision, and overheating.

Underarm Botox is different because it is targeted and long-lasting. It quiets only the sweat glands in the treated underarms, does not require daily upkeep, and keeps you drier for months at a time with essentially no downtime. Compared with permanent options such as microwave-based sweat gland destruction, Botox is minimally invasive and fully reversible, since results wear off on their own if you choose not to repeat them.

Express Med Spa treats underarm hyperhidrosis with Botox, the botulinum toxin type A that is FDA-approved for severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis. Your nurse practitioner reviews your history and goals at a free consultation to confirm it is the right fit for you.
