Jaw Slimming & TMJ Relief

Masseter Botox

Masseter Botox is one treatment with two very different payoffs. By relaxing the masseter, the large muscle at the angle of your jaw, a few precise injections can soften a wide, square jawline into a smoother contour, and they can ease the tension, soreness, and teeth grinding that come with an overworked jaw. At Express Med Spa we treat the masseter with Botox or Xeomin, matched to your goals, and we will be honest about what to expect: results are temporary, the slimming effect builds over a few weeks, and dosing is individualized. Every plan starts with a free consultation with Stefanie Drozd, MSN, APRN.

RESULTS TIMELINE

The slimming effect is gradual because it tracks the muscle shrinking: most people see the change develop over about three to six weeks rather than overnight. Relief from tension, clenching, and grinding can be felt sooner.

Result Last

Results are temporary. For most people, masseter treatment lasts around three to six months, after which the muscle gradually regains activity and a repeat treatment is scheduled to maintain the result. With consistent treatment, some patients find the muscle stays smaller and they can space sessions further apart.

BEST FOR

A wide or square jaw driven by an enlarged masseter muscle; teeth grinding (bruxism); jaw clenching; jaw tension and related headaches

What is masseter Botox used for?

Masseter Botox has two uses. Cosmetically, relaxing an overdeveloped masseter lets it slim over time for a softer, less square jawline. Functionally, that same relaxation reduces the force of clenching and grinding, easing jaw tension, soreness, and morning headaches. Many people come in for one and are glad to get both.

    How does masseter Botox work?

Botox is a neuromodulator that temporarily blocks the nerve signals telling a muscle to contract. Injected into the masseter, it partly relaxes the muscle so it works with less force. Used less, the muscle gradually shrinks, which is what both slims the jaw and lowers clenching and grinding force over time.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

When will I see results, and how long does masseter Botox last?

Relief from clenching and grinding often starts within one to two weeks. Visible jaw slimming is more gradual, developing over about six weeks to a few months as the muscle shrinks. Results typically last three to six months, and with repeat treatments the muscle often stays smaller for longer between visits.

Masseter Botox vs. a night guard and filler

A night guard protects your teeth from grinding but does not reduce the clenching force or slim the jaw; masseter Botox lowers the force itself, and the two can be used together. Filler is the opposite of slimming, adding volume to build or sharpen a jawline, so it is a different goal, not a substitute.

What happens at my masseter Botox appointment?

After a quick assessment of how strong your masseter is, your provider injects a few precise points on each side of the jaw. The whole visit takes about 15 to 20 minutes, most people find it a brief pinch, and there is no real downtime, so you can return to your day right away.

    About This Treatment

Masseter Botox relaxes the large chewing muscle at the angle of the jaw, which can both slim a square jawline and calm the clenching and grinding that strain it. The cards below cover what it is used for, how it works, and what to expect, with the full guide further down the page.

    Who Masseter Botox is For

Good Candidates? Is This Right for You?

Who masseter Botox helps. The best candidates have a wide or square lower face driven by an overdeveloped masseter muscle rather than by bone, or they grind or clench their teeth, wake with a sore jaw or headaches, or have jaw tension linked to TMJ. Relaxing the masseter can soften the jaw contour and reduce the force the muscle generates. Every plan is confirmed in person by Stefanie Drozd, MSN, APRN.

When it may not be the right fit. If a strong jawline is driven by bone structure rather than muscle, a neuromodulator will not change it, and if your goal is to build or sharpen the jawline rather than soften it, that is a job for a dermal filler. Botox and Xeomin for TMJ, teeth grinding, and jaw clenching are off-label uses and are not an FDA-approved cure for TMJ disorder; severe, structural, or worsening cases often need a dentist or orofacial-pain specialist as well. Your provider will tell you honestly whether masseter treatment fits your goals.

Contraindications & Risks / Side Effects

      Contraindications
      Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
A known allergy to botulinum toxin or to any ingredient in the product.
Active skin infection or inflamed skin at the injection sites.
Certain neuromuscular disorders (for example myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome) - discuss your full history with your provider at your consultation.
Severe, structural, or worsening TMJ disorder, which may need a dentist or orofacial-pain specialist rather than, or in addition to, a neuromodulator.

      Risks / Side Effects

Mild, temporary soreness, redness, or bruising at the injection sites.
A brief sense of chewing fatigue in the first week or two while the muscle adjusts.
Because the masseter sits near muscles used for smiling and chewing, imprecise placement can briefly affect your smile or bite - which is why an experienced injector and correct technique matter.
Results are temporary and dosing is individualized; the slimming effect builds gradually and may take more than one treatment to reach your goal.

      • How Masseter Botox Is Used: Jaw Slimming and Jaw-Tension Relief

Masseter Botox is used in two very different ways, and the same injection can deliver both. The masseter is the thick muscle at the back corner of your jaw that closes your mouth when you chew. When it is overdeveloped, it adds width and a square look to the lower face, and it can generate a lot of force when you clench or grind.

For jaw slimming, relaxing the masseter means it is used less, so over a series of treatments it gradually gets smaller and the lower face looks narrower and softer. This is a popular way to soften a wide or square jawline without surgery. Our guide to jawline slimming with a neuromodulator walks through how this works in more detail.

For jaw tension, clenching, and grinding, the same relaxation lowers the force the muscle produces. That can ease a sore, tight jaw, reduce the wear that grinding puts on your teeth, and calm the tension headaches that often come with a clenching habit. Because the muscle is quieter, many people notice their jaw simply feels more relaxed through the day and overnight.

      • How Masseter Botox Works

Botox is a neuromodulator. It works by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that tell a muscle to contract, so the treated muscle relaxes and works with less force. It is the same active ingredient used to soften wrinkles, but here it is placed in a large muscle rather than the small muscles of expression.

When the masseter is relaxed, two things follow. First, it generates less force, so clenching and grinding ease off fairly quickly. Second, because the muscle is being used less, it gradually slims through the same disuse that shrinks any muscle you stop working, which is why the jaw-narrowing effect builds over weeks to months rather than appearing overnight.

The dose is measured in units and tailored to how strong your masseter is, so a heavier grinder or a stronger muscle needs more than a lighter one. At Express Med Spa every treatment is performed by Stefanie Drozd, MSN, APRN, and our nurse practitioner team, who place the injections precisely to keep your natural expression and bite intact.

      • When You'll See Results and How Long Masseter Botox Lasts

The two payoffs of masseter Botox arrive on different timelines. If your goal is relief from clenching, grinding, or a sore jaw, many people feel the muscle soften within one to two weeks, once the neuromodulator has fully taken effect.

Jaw slimming is more gradual. Because it depends on the muscle shrinking from reduced use, the narrowing usually becomes visible over about six weeks to a few months, and it is often most noticeable after a second treatment. This is normal, and it is why masseter Botox for slimming is planned as a short series rather than a single visit.

Results are not permanent. A treatment typically lasts three to six months, after which the muscle gradually regains strength and the effect fades. Many people who treat clenching or slim the jaw come in a few times a year, and with consistent treatment the masseter often stays smaller and calmer for longer between visits.

      • Masseter Botox vs. a Night Guard and Filler

Because masseter Botox spans a cosmetic and a functional job, it is often compared with two very different alternatives.

Versus a night guard. A dental night guard is a shield: it protects your tooth enamel from the damage of grinding, but it does not reduce how hard you clench, and it does nothing for the width of your jaw. Masseter Botox works upstream by lowering the force the muscle can generate in the first place. The two are not mutually exclusive, and some people use a night guard to protect their teeth while masseter Botox reduces the underlying clenching.

Versus dermal filler. These pull in opposite directions. Masseter Botox relaxes and slims a strong muscle, while filler adds volume to build up or sharpen a jawline. If your goal is a softer, narrower lower face, Botox is the tool; if it is a more defined or projected jaw, that is a filler conversation. Stefanie Drozd, MSN, APRN will map the right approach to your goal at your consultation.

      • What to Expect: Units, the Injections, and Downtime

A masseter Botox visit is quick and low-key. Your provider first checks how strong and full your masseter is, usually by having you clench so they can feel the muscle, which guides how many units you need and exactly where to place them.

The treatment itself is a few small injections into each masseter, near the back corner of the jaw. Most people describe it as a quick pinch, the injections take only a few minutes, and numbing is generally not needed. The full appointment, including the assessment, usually runs about 15 to 20 minutes.

There is essentially no downtime. You might have slight redness or a small bump at the injection sites that settles within an hour or two, and you can return to work and normal activities right away. To let the neuromodulator settle where it was placed, we will ask you to avoid rubbing the area and hard chewing for the rest of the day. Every treatment at Express Med Spa is performed by a licensed nurse practitioner, at our locations in Frankfort, La Grange, Shorewood, and Mount Greenwood, easy to reach from across the Chicago southwest suburbs, including the Naperville area.
