Microdermabrasion Facial in Chicagoland

A microdermabrasion facial polishes away the dull, dead cell layer sitting on the surface of your skin, so what shows through is smoother, brighter, and readier for your skincare. Express Med Spa performs it with a needle-free, crystal-free Nano Tip cartridge on the CytoPen S2, at all four Chicagoland clinics.

BEST FOR

Dull skin, rough or uneven texture, clogged pores and congestion, dry flaky patches, pre-event glow
  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

How does a microdermabrasion facial work?

It is mechanical exfoliation. A non-abrasive Nano Tip cartridge on the CytoPen S2 is passed over the skin 2 to 4 times to lift away the dead cells sitting on the surface. There are no crystals, no suction, and no needles, and it works on the epidermis only.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

Where is a microdermabrasion facial used?

The full face, with extra passes over congested areas such as the nose, chin, and forehead. Clients book it as a standalone polish, as maintenance every 3 to 4 weeks, or 1 to 2 days before an event. It is offered at all four Chicagoland clinics.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

    What happens at my appointment?

Plan on a 60 minute visit, with roughly 30 to 40 minutes of active treatment. Your provider cleanses the skin, applies a hyaluronic acid serum, makes 2 to 4 Nano Tip passes, sets a hydrogel mask for about 7 minutes, then finishes with moisturizer and SPF.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

When will I see results, and how long do they last?

Skin usually looks brighter and feels smoother the same day, with no peeling or flaking afterward. The result typically holds about 3 to 4 weeks, which is why maintenance visits are commonly spaced that way. Individual results vary.

Microdermabrasion or microneedling: which one do I need?

Both run on the same CytoPen S2 pen at Express Med Spa, and the cartridge is what changes. Microdermabrasion polishes the surface with no needles and minimal downtime at $175. Microneedling reaches deeper to build collagen at $295, with a real recovery window.

Who Microdermabrasion Facial (Nano Tip) is For

Good Candidates? Is This Right for You?

    Concerns a Microdermabrasion Facial Addresses

A microdermabrasion facial improves the appearance of concerns that live in the outermost layer of the skin:

    • Dull, tired looking skin that has lost its glow
    • Rough or uneven texture you can feel with your fingertips
    • Clogged pores, blackheads, and general congestion
    • Dry, flaky patches sitting on the surface
    • Fine surface lines and a papery look caused by dead cell buildup
    • Makeup that goes on patchy or settles into texture
    • Skincare that seems to sit on top of the skin rather than sink in

It is worth being equally clear about the other side of that list. Because it works on the surface only, a microdermabrasion facial is not the right tool for deep wrinkles, significant laxity, true indented acne scarring, melasma, or active cystic acne. Those concerns need something that reaches the dermis, and your provider will point you toward the option that can get there.

    Who Is a Good Candidate

Most healthy adults with intact skin are candidates. It suits you well if your main complaint is that your skin looks flat, feels rough, or has stopped responding to your products, and if you want a visible change with minimal downtime. It works across skin types and tones, because the Nano Tip is mechanical and uses no light or heat, so nothing in the treatment targets pigment.

It is a sensible first step if you have never had a professional treatment and are not ready for needling or peels. It also fits one very specific practical need: an appointment 1 to 2 days before an event, when you want your skin looking as fresh as it can and cannot risk a recovery window.

Set your expectations at maintenance rather than transformation. One visit gives a real, visible result that lasts a few weeks. A regular rhythm is what compounds. Individual results vary.

    Safety and Who Should Wait

A microdermabrasion facial is non-invasive. The Nano Tip does not puncture the skin, no crystals or suction are used, and the service is consented and performed as a facial rather than as a needling procedure. Most people find it comfortable and describe the sensation as light buffing.

As with any professional exfoliation, there are situations where your provider will postpone treatment or suggest a gentler alternative. Skin that is actively broken out with inflamed or cystic acne, an active skin infection, an open wound or cold sore in the treatment area, or an active rosacea or eczema flare generally needs to settle first. Recent chemical peels, laser treatment, or waxing in the area, sunburned or windburned skin, and recent isotretinoin (Accutane) use are also reasons to wait. These are general guidelines rather than a complete list. Your provider reviews your medical health history and your current skincare routine at your complimentary consultation and confirms whether this treatment is right for you before anything is done.

Afterward, skin is temporarily more sensitive to sun. Daily SPF is not optional in the week that follows.

        • How a Nano Tip Microdermabrasion Facial Works

A microdermabrasion facial is a professional exfoliating treatment that removes the layer of dead cells sitting on the outside of your skin. That layer is called the stratum corneum, and it is the reason skin starts to look dull and grey, feel rough under your fingertips, and stop absorbing skincare properly. Take the layer off and the fresher cells underneath are what light hits and what your products reach. That is the entire mechanism, and it is why the result is a brighter, smoother surface rather than a structural change.

Express Med Spa performs it with a Nano Tip cartridge on the CytoPen S2, an FDA-cleared professional pen platform. The Nano Tip is a needle-free, crystal-free, suction-free polishing head. Your provider makes 2 to 4 passes at light to moderate pressure over skin that has been prepped with a hyaluronic acid serum, so the tip glides across the surface rather than scraping it.

This is not traditional microdermabrasion. Older systems work one of two ways. Those older machines either spray a stream of aluminum oxide crystals at the skin, or they drag a diamond-coated wand across it, and both use vacuum suction to pull the skin up into the handpiece and draw the debris away. That combination of abrasion and suction is the part of older microdermabrasion most associated with stinging, lingering redness, and irritation on thinner skin. The Nano Tip removes all three elements: no crystals to spray or clean up, no vacuum on the skin, and nothing sharp.

It is also not microneedling. The CytoPen S2 accepts interchangeable cartridges, and Express Med Spa uses a needle cartridge on that same device for microneedling. A microdermabrasion facial uses the non-needle Nano Tip instead. It works on the epidermis only and does not puncture the skin, which is why it is consented and performed as a facial rather than as a needling procedure.

For a plain-language walkthrough of the basics, read our guide, What Is a Microdermabrasion Facial?

        • Where a Microdermabrasion Facial Is Used

A microdermabrasion facial at Express Med Spa covers the full face. Your provider works across the forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin, and spends extra passes on the areas that hold congestion, which for most people is the nose, the chin, and the center of the forehead. If there is an area you particularly want worked on, or one you would rather have left alone, say so at the start of the visit.

Because it works on the surface only and leaves no peeling or flaking behind, clients tend to use it in three fairly distinct ways:

          • As a standalone polish: a single visit when skin has gone dull, rough, or flat and you want it to look awake again.
          • As routine maintenance: a repeat visit roughly every 3 to 4 weeks, which tracks the skin’s own turnover cycle.
          • As pre-event preparation: booked 1 to 2 days before a wedding, a photo session, or an event, because there is no recovery window to plan around and makeup sits more evenly on freshly exfoliated skin.

It is available at all four Express Med Spa clinics: La Grange, Frankfort, Shorewood, and Mount Greenwood (Chicago). The appointment is bookable online, and no good faith exam is required before treatment.

        • What Happens at Your Microdermabrasion Facial Appointment

The visit is booked as a 60 minute slot, with roughly 30 to 40 minutes of that spent on the treatment itself. The remainder covers intake, your provider’s assessment of your skin, and finishing.

Before treatment you complete a medical health history, a facial questionnaire, and an infection control questionnaire, and you sign a facial consent. There is no numbing, no injection, and no good faith exam required.

The protocol runs in five steps:

          1. Cleanse: your provider removes makeup, sunscreen, and surface oil.
          2. Hyaluronic acid serum: applied to clean skin so the Nano Tip glides and the surface stays hydrated through the passes.
          3. Nano Tip passes: 2 to 4 passes at light to moderate pressure, with more attention on congested areas. Most people describe it as a light buffing sensation. Your provider works within a protocol that specifically calls for no bleeding and no discomfort at any point.
          4. Hydrogel mask: left on for about 7 minutes to calm and hydrate the freshly exfoliated surface.
          5. Finish: the remaining serum is massaged in, then moisturizer and SPF.

Microdermabrasion facials at Express Med Spa are performed by our licensed nurse practitioners, aesthetic nurses, and licensed estheticians. The Nano Tip does not puncture the skin, and every provider performs it within their own license and training.

You leave wearing SPF and can go straight back to your day. Leave makeup off for the first 12 to 24 hours.

        • Results Timeline and How Long a Microdermabrasion Facial Lasts

Same day. Most clients notice the change immediately. Skin looks brighter, feels noticeably smoother to the touch, and loses the flat, grey cast that a built up dead cell layer creates. Mild redness is possible for a few hours afterward and settles on its own. There should be no peeling and no flaking in the days that follow, which is one of the practical differences between this and a chemical peel.

The first day or two. Makeup goes back on after 12 to 24 hours and tends to sit more evenly. Many clients say their usual serums feel like they are working better for a while, because those products are no longer travelling through a layer of dead cells. Skin is temporarily more sensitive to UV, so daily SPF matters more than usual that week.

How long it holds. The result generally lasts about 3 to 4 weeks, and there is a reason that number keeps coming up. It is roughly how long your skin takes to push a fresh layer of cells to the surface and let them die off. Microdermabrasion accelerates the removal of that layer, it does not stop the layer from re-forming. This is a maintenance treatment rather than a one-time correction, and any honest description of it says so.

Clients who come in on a regular 3 to 4 week rhythm generally report that their skin holds a smoother baseline over time. A single visit still delivers a real, visible change, it simply fades on the timeline above. Individual results vary, and your provider will suggest a cadence that suits your skin at your consultation.

        • Microdermabrasion vs Microneedling, and How It Compares With Our Other Facials

The most common question about this treatment is how it differs from microneedling, and at Express Med Spa the comparison is unusually clean, because both treatments run on the same CytoPen S2 pen. What changes is the cartridge on the end of it, and that single swap changes everything else.

          • Depth: microdermabrasion works on the epidermis, the outer layer. Microneedling creates controlled micro-channels that reach the dermis beneath it.
          • Mechanism: microdermabrasion removes dead surface cells. Microneedling triggers a healing response that builds new collagen over the weeks that follow.
          • Downtime: microdermabrasion has minimal downtime, with mild redness possible for a few hours. Microneedling has a genuine recovery window of a day or more, with redness closer to a sunburn.
          • Suited to: microdermabrasion for dullness, rough texture, and surface congestion. Microneedling for concerns that live deeper, including atrophic acne scarring, enlarged pores, and lines with a structural component.
          • Price: a microdermabrasion facial is $175. Microneedling for the face is $295.
          • Cadence: microdermabrasion roughly every 3 to 4 weeks as maintenance. Microneedling as a spaced series over months.

Neither replaces the other, and plenty of clients do both on different schedules. If your goal is a smoother, brighter surface, microdermabrasion is the tool that matches it and microneedling is more than you need. If your goal is to change scarring or firmness, microdermabrasion will not get you there, and we will tell you that at consultation rather than sell you facials that cannot reach it.

Two other Express Med Spa treatments sit close by:

          • Dermaplaning Facial, $105: also surface exfoliation, but performed with a sterile blade that removes fine vellus hair along with the dead cell layer. Our team walks through the differences in dermaplaning vs microdermabrasion.
          • AquaFacial, $150: wet hydradermabrasion, sometimes described as wet microdermabrasion. A fluid based tip loosens and lifts debris while hydrating serums go in during the same pass, where a microdermabrasion facial is a dry mechanical polish with no fluid involved. Dehydrated skin usually does better with the AquaFacial. Rough, congested texture usually does better with the Nano Tip. They are two different treatments, not two names for one.

Chemical peels, including the VI Peel line, sit a tier deeper. A peel uses acids to loosen and shed cells chemically over several days, which reaches further but comes with visible flaking, where a microdermabrasion facial is finished when you walk out the door. Our comparison of microdermabrasion vs chemical peel covers when each one makes sense. Prices are subject to change and are based on a planned consultation with staff.
