RESULTS TIMELINE

Most clients see slower, finer regrowth after the first two or three sessions, with the fullest reduction once they complete a series of 6 to 8 treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart.

Result Last

Laser hair removal delivers permanent hair reduction rather than permanent removal. After a full series most clients keep a large, lasting reduction, and a maintenance session once or twice a year holds the result as hormones activate new follicles.

BEST FOR

Unwanted hair on the face, underarms, bikini and Brazilian, chest, back, stomach, arms, and legs; dark hair across a wide range of skin tones; ingrown hairs and razor bumps; hormone-driven facial hair, including PCOS-related growth.

How does laser hair removal work?

A medical-grade laser sends focused light into the skin, where the pigment in the hair follicle absorbs it and converts it to heat. That heat damages the structures that produce new hair, so what grows back is finer and sparser. Because the laser follows pigment, it works best on hair darker than the surrounding skin, and a series is needed because only some follicles are in their growth phase on any given day.

    Which areas can be treated?

We treat small facial areas such as the lip, chin, brow, sideburn, and ear, plus the neck, underarm, chest, stomach, back, scalp, bikini, Brazilian, arms, legs, and toes. Pricing tracks the size of the area: small areas start at $50, mid-size areas are $75, and large areas are $100 per session. A Full Body package covering up to six areas is $399.

    What happens at my appointment?

Shave the area about a day before. Your provider reviews your medications and sun exposure, fits protective eyewear, treats a test spot, then passes the cooled handpiece over the area in overlapping sections. Most clients describe a warm snap, similar to a rubber band. A lip takes a few minutes and a full leg closer to an hour, and you return to your day right away.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

How many sessions, and how long do results last?

Most areas need 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, and coarse or hormone-driven hair can need 10 to 12. Laser delivers permanent hair reduction rather than permanent removal, so after a full series most clients keep a large, lasting reduction. Because hormones can activate new follicles over time, a maintenance session once or twice a year holds the result.

How is laser different from waxing or electrolysis?

Shaving, waxing, and threading remove hair at or near the surface and leave the follicle intact, so growth returns on a fixed cycle. Laser works on the follicle itself, so it changes how much hair grows back at all. Electrolysis also treats the follicle and is the option for gray or blonde hair, but it clears one follicle at a time rather than a whole area per pass.

    About This Treatment

Laser hair removal uses focused light to heat the pigment inside each hair follicle so the hair that grows back is finer and sparser. The cards below cover how it works, the areas we treat, what a session actually feels like, and how it compares to waxing and electrolysis, with the full guide further down the page.

Who Laser Hair Removal in Chicagoland is For

Good Candidates? Is This Right for You?

    Concerns Laser Hair Removal Addresses

Clients book laser hair removal for unwanted hair, but the reason behind it varies. It addresses the daily maintenance of shaving and the recurring cost of waxing, and it also helps with the problems those methods create: ingrown hairs, razor burn, and the dark marks left behind by repeated irritation. By reducing how much hair grows into the skin in the first place, it reduces folliculitis and the razor bumps common along the beard line and bikini area. It is also a common choice for hormone-driven facial hair, including growth related to PCOS, perimenopause, and thyroid changes.

    Who Is a Good Candidate

The strongest candidates have hair darker than the surrounding skin, because the laser follows pigment. Dark brown and black hair respond most strongly. Settings can be chosen conservatively enough to treat many medium and deeper skin tones safely when an experienced provider is selecting them, so skin tone by itself does not rule you out. Clients who are tired of a shaving or waxing routine, who get ingrown hairs, or who are managing hormone-related growth are all typical candidates.

Who Should Wait or Consider Another Option

Red, blonde, gray, and white hair carry too little pigment for a laser to target effectively, and electrolysis is the better route there. Laser hair removal is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding. An active tan, a sunburn, or recent self-tanner on the area means rescheduling, and recent isotretinoin use requires a waiting period. A tattoo inside the treatment area cannot be treated over. Your provider reviews all of this at your complimentary consultation and will tell you plainly if you are not a candidate.

    Safety and Supervision

Every session at Express Med Spa is performed by our nurse-practitioner-led clinical team on an FDA-cleared device, starting with a test spot on your skin before a full pass. Tell your provider about any medication that increases light sensitivity, any history of keloid scarring, and any recent sun exposure, because each one changes the settings we use or the timing of your session.

      What To Expect

      Pre & Post Treatment Care

      Pre-Care Instructions
Shave the treatment area about 24 hours before your appointment. Do not wax, pluck, or thread for four weeks beforehand.
Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for about two weeks before each session.
Stop retinoids and exfoliating acids on the treatment area three to five days before.
Arrive with clean skin. No lotion, deodorant, oil, or makeup on the area being treated.
Tell your provider about any medication that increases light sensitivity, including isotretinoin and certain antibiotics.

      Post-Care Instructions

Expect mild redness and raised follicles for a few hours to a day. A cool compress helps.
Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily to any treated area that sees sun, and avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for about two weeks.
Skip hot tubs, saunas, and strenuous workouts for 24 hours.
Do not wax, pluck, or thread between sessions. Shaving is fine at any point.
Expect treated hairs to shed over the following one to three weeks. That shedding is the follicle releasing the hair, not regrowth.

      • How Laser Hair Removal Works on the Follicle

Laser hair removal works on a principle called selective photothermolysis. The laser emits a wavelength of light that melanin absorbs far more readily than the surrounding skin does. When that light reaches a hair, the pigment in the shaft and follicle absorbs the energy and converts it to heat, and that heat damages the structures responsible for producing new hair. Skin with less pigment absorbs comparatively little of the energy, which is what allows the follicle to be treated while the surface is spared.

Express Med Spa performs laser hair removal on the Candela elos Plus, an FDA-cleared medical-grade platform. Our nurse-practitioner-led team selects the settings for your hair color, hair coarseness, and skin tone rather than running one fixed protocol for everyone, and the handpiece cools the skin surface at the moment of each pulse.

Because the laser follows pigment, hair color matters more than hair thickness. Dark brown and black hair absorb the most energy and respond best. Red, blonde, gray, and white hair carry little melanin, so results are limited and another method is usually the better route. Your provider confirms this at your complimentary consultation, before you commit to a series.

      • Why Laser Hair Removal Takes a Series of Sessions

Every hair on your body moves through a repeating cycle with three phases. In the anagen or growth phase the hair is actively growing, still connected to the follicle, and dense with the pigment the laser needs. In the catagen and telogen phases the hair detaches and rests, and there is no meaningful connection left for the energy to travel down.

Only a fraction of the hair in any area is in its growth phase at one time, and that fraction differs by body part. This is the single reason a series is required. One session treats the follicles that happen to be growing that day and does nothing for the ones that are resting. The next session, several weeks later, catches a different set, and so on until the area has been covered.

Spacing follows the same logic. Sessions are scheduled 4 to 6 weeks apart so a fresh group of follicles has entered the growth phase before you return. Coming in sooner does not speed anything up, because the resting follicles are not treatable yet. Areas where hair grows quickly, such as the face, sit at the shorter end of that window, while legs and backs sit at the longer end.

      • Facial Areas We Treat With Laser Hair Removal

Facial hair is the most common reason clients book laser hair removal with us. We treat the upper lip, chin and jawline, sideburns, the area between the brows, the ears, and the cheeks, either as individual areas or as a Full Face treatment. Small facial areas start at $50 per session and Full Face is $100.

Facial hair behaves differently from body hair. It is often hormone-driven, it regrows faster, and it responds to changes in thyroid function, pregnancy, perimenopause, and PCOS. Facial protocols therefore tend to run at the shorter end of the 4 to 6 week spacing and can need more sessions than an underarm or a leg. Facial skin is also thinner and more visible, so settings are chosen conservatively and built up across the series.

If the face is your main concern, our dedicated face laser hair removal page covers the facial protocol in more depth, and our guide to full face laser hair removal walks through session planning and cost. Clients managing hormone-driven growth may also want to read about laser hair removal for PCOS.

      • Body Areas and Full Body Laser Hair Removal

Beyond the face we treat the neck, underarm, chest, stomach, back, scalp, bikini line, Brazilian, buttocks, half and full arms, half and full legs, and the toes and feet. Pricing tracks the size of the area rather than the number of pulses. Small areas are $50. Mid-size areas such as the underarm, bikini, chest, stomach, neck, scalp, or a half limb are $75. Large areas such as a full leg, full arm, back, or Brazilian are $100.

Clients treating several areas usually choose the Full Body package, which covers up to six areas in a single visit for $399. Combining areas into one appointment also keeps the whole plan on one schedule, so you finish everything together instead of tracking separate timelines for each area.

Underarms, bikini, and lower legs tend to respond fastest, because the hair there is coarse and well pigmented. Backs, chests, and shoulders respond well but often need the full range of sessions. For a breakdown of what a complete series costs area by area, see our laser hair removal cost guide. If you have ink in an area you want treated, read laser hair removal over tattoos and does laser hair removal fade tattoos first.

      • What Happens at Your Laser Hair Removal Visit

Shave the area about 24 hours beforehand. The laser needs to reach the follicle under the skin, and hair left on the surface only absorbs energy at the surface, where it causes irritation instead of results. Do not wax, pluck, or thread for four weeks before a session, because those methods pull the follicle out and leave the laser nothing to target.

At the appointment your provider reviews your medications and any recent sun exposure, fits protective eyewear, and treats a small test spot before a full pass. The handpiece then moves across the skin in overlapping sections, cooling the surface as it pulses. Most clients describe the sensation as a warm snap, similar to a rubber band flicked against the skin, and it fades within a second. Coarse hair on the first session is the most noticeable, and later sessions are easier as density drops.

Time on the table depends entirely on the area. A lip or a brow takes a few minutes. An underarm takes roughly ten. A full leg or a back runs closer to an hour. There is no downtime. The area looks slightly pink and the follicles may look raised for a few hours, and you can drive yourself home and return to work the same day.

      • Results Timeline and How Long Reduction Lasts

Most clients notice a change after the first two or three sessions, usually as slower regrowth and a finer texture rather than bare skin. In the one to three weeks after each visit, treated hairs work their way out of the follicle and shed. That shedding looks like regrowth and is routinely mistaken for it, but the hair is being released, not regrown.

A full series runs 6 to 8 sessions for most areas, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Coarse, hormone-driven, or facial hair can need 10 to 12. Your provider tracks how you respond between visits and adjusts both the settings and the interval rather than holding you to a fixed count decided on day one.

What laser delivers is permanent hair reduction, not permanent hair removal, and that is the FDA-cleared language for these devices for a reason. After a full series most clients keep a large, lasting reduction in how much hair grows in the treated area. Because hormonal shifts can activate follicles that were dormant during your series, many clients return for a single maintenance session once or twice a year to hold the result.

      • Laser vs Shaving, Waxing, Threading, and Electrolysis

Shaving, waxing, and threading are removal methods. They take hair off at or just below the surface and leave the follicle untouched, so growth returns on its own schedule: every day or two for shaving, every few weeks for waxing and threading. The routine never ends, and the recurring cost of waxing over several years is frequently higher than a laser series.

Laser is a reduction method. It works on the follicle itself, so what changes is how much hair grows back at all. That is also why it takes longer to show a result than a wax does, and why the payoff is measured in what you stop doing rather than in how the skin looks the same afternoon.

Electrolysis is the other method that treats the follicle. It inserts a fine probe into one follicle at a time and, because it does not rely on pigment, it is the option that works on gray, white, red, and very blonde hair. The tradeoff is coverage: electrolysis clears one follicle per insertion, while a single laser pass covers a whole area. That is why laser is the practical choice for legs, backs, and Brazilians, and electrolysis suits small patches of unpigmented hair. If you would rather not commit to a series at all, we also offer waxing.

      • How Laser Hair Removal Compares to IPL

IPL is often marketed as laser hair removal, and it is not the same technology. A laser emits a single focused wavelength. IPL, or intense pulsed light, emits broad-spectrum light across many wavelengths at once through a filter. That spread makes IPL well suited to surface pigment and vascular concerns, and less efficient at delivering enough energy to a hair follicle to reduce regrowth.

The practical difference for you is session count and consistency. Because a laser concentrates its energy at the wavelength melanin absorbs best, it treats hair in fewer sessions and holds up better on coarse hair. IPL devices, including the at-home units sold for hair, generally need more sessions and produce a less predictable result, particularly on deeper skin tones where broad-spectrum light is absorbed by the surrounding skin as well as the hair.

Express Med Spa uses both, for different jobs. We use IPL photofacial for sun spots, redness, broken capillaries, and rosacea, where treating a range of surface targets at once is the point. For hair, we use a dedicated hair laser. Your provider will tell you which one fits what you are actually trying to change, and will say so if the answer is neither.
