Acne Treatment

If acne is not responding to drugstore products, professional in-office treatment can help. At Express Med Spa, our nurse practitioners treat acne with a combination of medical-grade chemical peels, professional extractions, cortisone injections for painful cysts, and customized acne facials, matched to your skin and the type of acne you have. Every plan starts with a free consultation, and for moderate, severe, or cystic acne we will be honest with you about when a dermatologist should be part of your care. Treatment is led by Stefanie Drozd, MSN, APRN.

RESULTS TIMELINE

Acne improves over a series rather than after a single visit. Treatments are usually spaced a few weeks apart and paired with a consistent home routine and daily SPF.

Result Last

Results depend on consistency in the office and at home. Ongoing maintenance and a simple home routine help hold and build on your results over time.

BEST FOR

Comedonal acne (blackheads and whiteheads), inflammatory acne (papules and pustules), hormonal acne, and the texture or early scarring acne leaves behind
  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

How does in-office acne treatment clear acne?

Acne forms when oil, dead skin, and bacteria clog pores and trigger inflammation. In-office treatment works on all of these at once: medical-grade peels clear and exfoliate at a strength drugstore products cannot reach, professional extractions empty clogged pores safely, and cortisone can calm a painful cyst fast. Treated together, skin clears faster and stays clearer.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

What treatments are used for acne?

Your plan is built from a few professional tools. Medical-grade chemical peels exfoliate and unclog pores; acne facials with professional extractions clear existing congestion; cortisone injections calm individual painful cysts; and microneedling can improve the texture and early scarring that acne leaves behind. Most plans combine a few of these over a series.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

How fast will my acne clear, and is it a series?

Many people see calmer, clearer skin within the first few treatments, while deeper or long-standing acne takes a full series to settle. Because your skin keeps making oil and cells, acne treatment is about ongoing control rather than a one-time cure, so a maintenance visit every few weeks to months keeps results steady.

In-office acne treatment vs. drugstore products, and when to see a dermatologist

Drugstore products can maintain mild acne, but they work slowly and only on the surface, which is why stubborn acne often needs professional treatment. For severe, deep, or nodulocystic acne, a dermatologist and prescription medication may be needed alongside or instead of in-office care. We will tell you honestly if that is the better route for you.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

What happens at an acne treatment visit?

Your visit starts with a look at your skin to choose the right treatment for the day, whether that is a peel, an acne facial with extractions, or a cortisone injection for a specific cyst. Most visits take about 30 to 45 minutes with minimal downtime, though a peel may leave you slightly pink or flaky for a few days.

    About This Treatment

When acne will not clear with products alone, in-office treatment goes after the oil, dead skin, bacteria, and inflammation behind it. The cards below cover how professional acne treatment works, the tools we use, and what to expect, with the full guide further down the page.

    Who Acne Treatment is For

Good Candidates? Is This Right for You?

Who in-office acne treatment helps. Comedonal and mild-to-moderate inflammatory acne often respond well to a series of medical-grade peels and acne facials with professional extractions, which keep pores clear while calming the surface. A single painful cyst may benefit from a cortisone injection for fast relief, and microneedling can help the texture and early scarring acne leaves behind once active breakouts are under control.

When a dermatologist should be involved. Deep cystic and nodular acne, and acne that needs prescription or systemic treatment, belong with a dermatologist. Our in-office treatments complement that medical care rather than replace it, and we will tell you honestly when adding a dermatologist to your plan is the right call.

    • So thankful the Express Med Spa team! I suffered with horrible acne all through high school and was left with a bunch of acne scars. Not even foundation could cover how many acne scars I had. • I feel like 5 stars isn’t enough. Stefanie and her staff are always so incredibly friendly. Express Med Spa is a warm and inviting environment. If you have questions, they will be answered for you so that a non medical person can understand why they a procedure, whether it’s neurotoxin, fillers, a chemical peel, etc. The team wants you to feel comfortable and confident getting work done, so there is absolutely no pressure. Their skin care line is amazing too. I have been dealing with hormonal changes and have more acne as an adult than I did as a teen. Within a few days of starting the EMS line, my skin has seen dramatic improvement. I am moving out of state, but will be a lifelong customer.

I came in for the first time and was welcomed by Addy the front desk receptionist who made me feel like I was a regular for years. I was brought to the back where the nurse Angelika answered all my questions in great detail and made me feel comfortable asking any questions that I had without making me feel bad. Thank you so much for the kind and amazing experience! I will be coming back

      • How In-Office Acne Treatment Clears Acne

Acne is not just a surface problem. It starts when excess oil, dead skin cells, and acne-causing bacteria clog a pore, and the body’s inflammatory response turns that clog into a red, sore breakout. Products from the drugstore work slowly and only on the surface, which is why stubborn acne often stalls no matter how many you try.

In-office treatment goes after every part of that process at a professional strength. Medical-grade chemical peels exfoliate and unclog pores far more deeply than an over-the-counter product, professional extractions empty blocked pores without the scarring risk of picking at home, and a cortisone injection can shrink a single painful cyst within a day or two. Calming the inflammation is just as important as clearing the pore, because inflammation is what drives both new breakouts and lasting marks.

Because acne is an ongoing process, in-office treatment works best as a short series rather than a one-time fix. At Express Med Spa every treatment is performed by a licensed nurse practitioner who builds a plan around your skin, so you are treating the causes of your acne, not just today’s breakout.

      • The In-Office Acne Toolkit: Peels, Facials, Extractions, and More

There is no single acne treatment that fits everyone, so we build each plan from a set of professional tools and combine them to match your skin:

        • Medical-grade chemical peels exfoliate, unclog pores, and reduce oil at a strength you cannot buy over the counter. If you are weighing your resurfacing options, our guide to microdermabrasion vs. chemical peel explains the difference.
        • Acne facials with professional extractions deep-clean the skin and safely empty clogged pores, so blackheads and whiteheads are cleared without the scarring risk of doing it at home.
        • Cortisone injections target a single large, painful cyst to bring down the swelling quickly.
        • Microneedling is used more for the texture and early scarring acne can leave than for active breakouts, helping smooth the skin as it heals.

Combining treatments is usually more effective than any one alone, and your nurse practitioner will sequence them so each visit builds on the last.

      • How Fast You'll See Clearer Skin, and Keeping It That Way

How quickly acne clears depends on how deep and how active it is. Surface congestion and mild breakouts often calm within the first few treatments, while more inflammatory or long-standing acne usually needs a full series before the skin truly settles. A single cortisone injection is the exception, since it can shrink one painful cyst within a day or two.

The honest part is that acne treatment is about control, not a permanent cure. Your skin keeps producing oil and shedding cells, so once your acne is under control, an occasional maintenance treatment every few weeks to a few months keeps pores clear and breakouts from building back up.

If past breakouts have already left scars or marks, clearing the active acne comes first, and then a separate plan can address the scarring. Our acne scar treatment is built for exactly that next step once your skin has calmed.

      • In-Office Treatment vs. Drugstore Products, and When You Need a Dermatologist

Over-the-counter cleansers and spot treatments have their place, and for very mild acne they may be enough to keep skin clear. The limitation is that they work slowly and only at the surface, so moderate or stubborn acne often stops responding to them, which is where professional-strength peels, extractions, and a tailored plan make the difference.

It is also important to be honest about the ceiling of in-office aesthetic treatment. Severe, deep, or nodulocystic acne, and acne driven strongly by hormones, often needs a medical dermatologist and prescription medication such as oral treatments that a med spa does not provide. In those cases, in-office peels and facials can still support your skin, but they work best alongside medical care rather than in place of it.

At your visit we will look at your skin honestly and tell you whether in-office treatment will get you there or whether a dermatologist should be part of your plan. The goal is clear skin by the most effective route, not selling you treatments that will not get you there.

      • What to Expect at Your Acne Treatment Visit

Your visit begins with your nurse practitioner looking closely at your skin and choosing the right treatment for that day, whether that is a medical-grade peel, an acne facial with professional extractions, or a cortisone injection for a specific painful cyst.

Most acne visits take about 30 to 45 minutes. A peel is applied and neutralized in the office, extractions are done with sterile technique to protect your skin, and any advice on products or aftercare is tailored to what you had done. You will get clear instructions on how to care for your skin over the next few days.

Downtime is minimal. After a peel your skin may look slightly pink and then flake lightly for a few days as it renews, and extractions can leave brief redness, but most people return to their normal routine right away with sunscreen. Every treatment at Express Med Spa is performed by a licensed nurse practitioner, at our locations in Frankfort, La Grange, Shorewood, and Mount Greenwood, easy to reach from across the Chicago southwest suburbs, including the Naperville area.
