Hand Rejuvenation in Chicagoland

Radiesse is an injectable made of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres suspended in a smooth gel carrier. CaHA is a mineral compound found naturally in bone, which is part of why Radiesse behaves differently from the hyaluronic acid fillers most people research first. On the backs of the hands it does two things at once.

The first is immediate. Hands look bony and skeletal because the soft tissue cushion that sits between the skin and the underlying tendons, veins, and bones thins out over the years. Radiesse replaces that lost cushion, so the hollows between the tendons fill in and the hard structures underneath stop reading so sharply through the skin.

The second happens slowly. The gel carrier is absorbed over the weeks after treatment while the CaHA microspheres act as a scaffold that prompts your own cells to lay down new collagen. That is why Radiesse is described as a biostimulator, or collagen stimulator, and why the skin on the back of the hand often looks thicker and less crepey a couple of months after the appointment rather than on day one. Hand rejuvenation treats the dorsum, the back of the hand, and nothing else. At Express Med Spa the treated zones are:

• The hollows between the tendons: the channels that deepen as the soft tissue cushion thins, letting the tendons stand out as ridges
• The plane above the prominent veins: filler sits above the vessels and softens how sharply they read through thin skin, which is camouflage rather than vein removal
• The broad surface of the back of the hand: where crepey, papery texture shows and where the collagen response does its work

Both hands are treated in the same visit so they match. How the product is applied matters as much as where. Your injector places it through a small number of entry points, usually with a cannula or a fine needle, then distributes it evenly across the plane so it sits as a smooth layer rather than a lump over any one tendon.

Because the back of the hand is a broad surface and both hands are treated together, most plans use more than one syringe, and your injector confirms the number at your consultation.

There are areas this treatment does not cover. Radiesse is not placed in the fingers or the palms. Every appointment starts with a consultation. Your nurse practitioner looks at how much volume you have lost, how thin the skin is, and how prominent the tendons and veins are, then tells you honestly whether Radiesse is the right tool or whether something else fits your goal better. Because Radiesse cannot be dissolved the way a hyaluronic acid filler can, that planning conversation carries real weight.

The visit itself is straightforward:

• We cleanse both hands and can apply a topical numbing cream for comfort.
• Your injector marks the hollows to be treated so the product is distributed evenly.
• The product is placed through a small number of entry points using a cannula or a fine needle, then spread across the back of the hand.
• Most visits take about 30 to 60 minutes from start to finish.
• You can return to most normal activities the same day, with a break from heavy gripping and strenuous exercise.

Two things happen on two different clocks. The volume is there the day you leave, because the product itself is doing that work immediately, and it is usually accompanied by some swelling across the backs of the hands that settles within a few days. So the very first look is a mix of product and swelling, not your final result.

The second clock is collagen. Over the following weeks and months your body responds to the CaHA scaffold by laying down new collagen, which is what improves skin quality rather than just filling hollows. Most people describe the change as hands that look fuller and smoother, with tendons and veins that read softer rather than disappearing.

Results commonly last 12 to 18 months, depending on your skin, your sun exposure, and how much product was used. Individual results vary. Versus hyaluronic acid hand filler. Hyaluronic acid products add volume and hold water, and they can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if you change your mind. Radiesse adds volume too, but it also leaves a scaffold that prompts your own collagen, and it cannot be dissolved. That trade, reversibility for a collagen benefit, is the real decision. Versus light based treatment for sun spots. Many people dislike two different things about their hands at once: the bony, hollow look and the brown spots. Those are separate problems. Filler restores volume and does not fade pigment, while a light based treatment fades pigment and does not restore volume. Plenty of patients do both, and your nurse practitioner will sequence them at your consultation.

Versus creams and at home care. Hand creams, retinoids, and daily sunscreen genuinely help surface texture and protect what you have. They work at the surface, though, and they cannot replace the soft tissue cushion that has thinned underneath.
