Pre-jowl and chin filler treatment zones at Express Med Spa Chicago

Hyaluronic Acid Dermal Filler

Pre-Jowl and Chin Filler

The lower face and jawline are often where aging becomes most visible and least expected. The pre-jowl sulcus is the hollow that forms just in front of the jowl area, creating a notch along the jawline that interrupts what used to be a smooth, continuous line from chin to ear. The mental crease is the horizontal line or dimpling that forms between the lower lip and the chin as the chin loses volume and the overlying muscle becomes more prominent. Both concerns develop gradually, and both can be meaningfully improved with a small amount of precisely placed hyaluronic acid filler. At Express Med Spa, our nurse practitioners treat the lower face as a connected zone, assessing the pre-jowl area, the chin, and the jawline together to achieve a result that looks balanced and natural from every angle.

RESULTS TIMELINE

9 to 12 months on average. The lower face is a moderate-movement zone. Individual results vary based on facial anatomy, the volume of product used, metabolism, and lifestyle.

Result Last

6 to 9 months on average. The perioral area is a high-movement zone and filler here tends to metabolize faster than in lower-movement areas such as the cheeks. Patients who combine perioral filler with a neurotoxin treatment in the same area may find results last toward the longer end of that range.

About This Treatment

What is Pre-Jowl and Chin Filler?

Pre-jowl and chin filler is a non-surgical injectable treatment that uses a hyaluronic acid gel to restore definition and smooth contour to the lower face. It targets two specific anatomical concerns that tend to develop together as the face ages: the pre-jowl sulcus, which is the hollow that forms in front of the jowl along the jawline, and the mental crease, which is the horizontal line or dimpling that appears between the lower lip and the chin.

Neither concern is well known by name until a patient is sitting across from a nurse practitioner and hearing their own face described for the first time. But both are familiar visually: the jawline that has lost its clean edge, the chin that has developed a crease above it, the lower face that has shifted from structured to soft in a way that is hard to put your finger on. Filler in these two areas can meaningfully restore that lost definition in a single appointment, with no surgery, no anesthesia, and no downtime.

Treatment Pricing

Price shown is per syringe. Pre-jowl and chin filler is often achievable with one syringe when treating the mental crease or pre-jowl sulcus alone. Patients who want to address both zones in the same visit, or who also want to refine the jawline more comprehensively, may benefit from a second syringe. Your nurse practitioner will walk you through a specific volume recommendation during your consultation. This treatment is frequently combined with marionette line filler in a single visit, as the two concerns often appear together in the lower face and share product efficiently.

Who I'ts For

Good Candidates? Is This Right for You?

Pre-jowl and chin filler is appropriate for adults 22 years and older who have noticed a loss of definition along the jawline, a hollow or indentation in front of the jowl that interrupts the jaw’s natural contour, a horizontal crease or dimpling between the lower lip and the chin, or a chin that appears shorter or less projected than it once did due to volume loss.

This treatment is particularly effective for patients in their late thirties through fifties who are beginning to notice lower face aging but have not yet reached the stage where surgical intervention is the most appropriate option. Filler in the pre-jowl area works by filling the sulcus, the indentation in front of the jowl, which visually blends the jowl into the surrounding tissue and restores a smoother jawline contour. It does not remove the jowl tissue itself, but it camouflages the notch that makes the jowl visually prominent. Filler in the mental crease softens the horizontal line or cobblestone texture above the chin, restoring a smoother transition between the lower lip and the chin.

Patients with significant skin laxity, heavy jowling, or substantial bone remodeling may see partial improvement with filler but are likely to benefit most from a consultation that also discusses longer-term or surgical options. Your nurse practitioner will assess your lower face anatomy honestly and let you know what is and is not realistic for your specific presentation.

What To Expect

Pre & Post Treatment Care

Pre-Care Instructions

Avoid blood-thinning medications and supplements for 48 to 72 hours before your appointment if medically safe to do so. This includes aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, fish oil, vitamin E, and alcohol. Do not stop any prescription medication without consulting your prescribing physician first.
Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before your appointment to reduce the risk of bruising and swelling.
Arrive with clean skin. Remove all makeup, skincare products, and topical treatments from the treatment area before your appointment.
Stay well hydrated and eat a light meal before your visit to reduce the chance of lightheadedness during treatment.
Do not schedule this filler treatment within 4 weeks of laser resurfacing, intense pulsed light, chemical peel, or dermabrasion in the same area.
Inform your provider of all current medications, supplements, recent dental procedures, and any changes to your health since your last visit.
If you have a history of cold sores or oral herpes simplex virus, disclose this before booking any lip or perioral filler treatment. Your provider may recommend a short course of antiviral medication before your appointment as a precaution.

Post-Care Instructions

Do not rub, massage, or apply any pressure to the treated area along the jawline and chin for at least 24 hours following treatment.
Avoid strenuous exercise and activities that significantly elevate your heart rate for 24 hours after your appointment.
Avoid alcohol for 24 hours post-treatment.
Avoid sleeping face-down on the night of your treatment. Sleeping face-down places direct pressure on the chin and jaw area and can affect the placement of recently injected product. Sleep on your back if possible.
Avoid significant heat exposure for 24 to 48 hours following treatment, including saunas, steam rooms, hot showers, and prolonged sun exposure.
Mild swelling and possible bruising in the lower face and chin area are normal. Some patients notice firmness along the treated zone for a few days as the product settles. A cold compress applied gently can help, do not press or massage.
Do not schedule laser treatments, intense pulsed light, chemical peels, or dermabrasion in the treated area for at least 4 weeks post-treatment.
Allow a full two weeks before evaluating your result. Initial swelling in the lower face may alter the appearance of the jawline until fully resolved.
Contact Express Med Spa immediately if you experience prolonged swelling beyond one week, changes in skin color, skin blanching or mottling, severe pain, or any symptoms that concern you.
