Does Microneedling Work For Acne Scars? microneedling treatment on forehead for collagen stimulation in southwest suburbs Illinois Does microneedling work for acne scars

Skin Treatments

Microneedling is one of the most effective treatments we offer for improving skin texture, reducing acne scars, and rebuilding collagen in the face. Using a medical-grade device, our nurse practitioners create controlled micro-channels in the skin that trigger your body's natural healing response. The result over time is smoother, firmer, more even-toned skin. No lasers. No chemicals. Just your own skin doing what it does best, with a little encouragement.

BEST FOR

Acne scars, uneven texture

    How does facial microneedling work?

A medical-grade device creates controlled micro-channels in the facial skin, triggering your body's healing response. New collagen and elastin form over the following weeks, smoothing texture from the inside out.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

Which areas of the face are treated?

A full-face session covers the cheeks, forehead, chin, and jawline, the zones where acne scarring, rough texture, and enlarged pores show most. A neck add-on is available for treating past the jawline.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

    What happens during the session?

Numbing cream is applied first, then your provider works the device methodically across the face over a 45 to 60 minute visit. Expect 1 to 3 days of mild, sunburn-like redness afterward.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

When will I see results, and how many sessions do I need?

Early improvement shows within 2 to 4 weeks, with best results after a series of 3 to 6 sessions spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Results last 6 to 12 months, and a quarterly session sustains the collagen you built.

  • Stefanie Drozd, Full Practice Authority Nurse Practitioner specializing in aesthetic and wellness treatments

    Microneedling or a chemical peel?

Peels resurface chemically from the top down; microneedling rebuilds collagen from the bottom up. For acne scars and etched-in texture, microneedling usually wins. For tone and pigment, a peel may fit better, and the two can alternate.

    About This Treatment

Here is how facial microneedling rebuilds collagen where it shows most, which zones of the face a session covers, what the 45 to 60 minute visit is like, and how it compares to a chemical peel for texture concerns.

    Who Microneedling Face is For

Good Candidates? Is This Right for You?

Microneedling is a good fit for patients who want to improve skin texture, reduce the appearance of acne scars, minimize pores, or address early signs of aging without the downtime of a laser or the unpredictability of a chemical peel. It works across a wide range of skin tones and types, which makes it one of our most universally recommended skin treatments. If you are committed to a series of sessions and can follow post-care instructions consistently, you are likely a strong candidate.

What Clients Say About Microneedling Face

    • So thankful the Express Med Spa team! I suffered with horrible acne all through high school and was left with a bunch of acne scars. Not even foundation could cover how many acne scars I had. Stefanie gave me an microneedling treatment and within a month my face was nearly perfect. I can’t even describe how much my confidence has went up in my natural beauty because of Stefanie’s help.

      • How Facial Microneedling Works

Facial microneedling uses a medical-grade device to create thousands of controlled micro-channels in the skin. Those micro-injuries flip on your body’s natural healing response: fibroblasts arrive, and over the following weeks they rebuild collagen and elastin, the structural proteins that keep facial skin smooth, firm, and even.

No lasers, no chemicals, just your own skin doing what it does best, with a little encouragement. Because the face carries the thinnest, most visible skin you own, it is also where that collagen rebuild pays off most: softened acne scars, refined pores, and texture that reads smooth in daylight, not just in photos.

      • The Facial Zones a Session Covers

A full-face session treats the areas where texture concerns concentrate: the cheeks, where acne scarring and enlarged pores are most common; the forehead, where early fine lines settle in; and the chin and jawline, where breakout scarring and rough patches linger. Your nurse practitioner adjusts needle depth zone by zone, since the skin over the forehead and the skin over the cheeks tolerate different settings.

Treatment can extend beyond the face when it makes sense: a neck add-on is available for patients whose texture or sun damage continues past the jawline, and our microneedling overview covers the full menu of body areas, Sublative RF, and PRP enhancement options.

      • What to Expect at Your Visit

Your session begins with a topical numbing cream, applied about 20 to 30 minutes before treatment, so most patients feel a mild buzzing or light scratching rather than pain. The treatment itself is methodical: your provider works the device in passes across each facial zone, adjusting depth as the skin changes.

Plan for 45 to 60 minutes in the chair. Afterward, expect 1 to 3 days of mild, sunburn-like redness with possible light flaking as the skin turns over. Most patients treat on a Thursday or Friday and are camera-ready by Monday, following simple post-care: gentle products, no active exfoliants for a few days, and diligent SPF.

      • Results, Series, and Maintenance

Initial improvements are usually visible within 2 to 4 weeks of your first session as the earliest collagen forms. But microneedling is cumulative by design: the best results arrive after a series of 3 to 6 treatments spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart, with each session building on the remodeling the last one started. Deeper acne scarring sits at the longer end of that range.

Once you have built the result, it lasts 6 to 12 months with consistent skincare and sun protection. A quarterly maintenance session is the rhythm most patients settle into to keep collagen production ahead of the aging curve. A PRP add-on is available to accelerate both the building and the maintenance phases.

      • Microneedling vs. a Chemical Peel for Facial Texture

Both treatments improve facial texture, but they work from opposite directions. A chemical peel resurfaces from the top down, dissolving damaged outer layers so fresher skin emerges; it excels at tone, pigment, and surface dullness. Microneedling rebuilds from the bottom up, stimulating new collagen beneath the surface; it excels at acne scars, etched-in texture, and enlarged pores, the concerns a peel can soften but rarely solve.

The two are not rivals so much as teammates on different problems, and some patients alternate them across the year. If your primary concern is scarring or texture depth, start here. If it is pigment or overall brightness, start with a peel. Either way, a consultation at any of our four locations will map your skin to the right sequence.
