Radiesse vs Sculptra: Collagen, Results and Safety

Lily Zelaya
May 3, 2026

Radiesse and Sculptra are different injectable products that can stimulate collagen, but they are not interchangeable. Radiesse contains calcium hydroxylapatite, often shortened to CaHA, in a gel carrier. Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid, or PLLA. The choice involves the treatment goal, area, timing, product labeling and medical assessment, rather than a universal winner.

This comparison explains the categories and questions to discuss with a qualified injector. Express Med Spa’s current menu lists Radiesse. This article does not establish Sculptra availability; ask the clinic about current products before planning treatment.

The FDA’s dermal filler guidance describes different filler materials, approved uses and risks. Approval belongs to a particular product and indication. It does not mean that every injection site or technique using that material is approved.

Volume, collagen and skin texture are different goals

When people ask which filler is better, they may be describing different concerns. Loss of facial volume, a change in contour, fine surface texture and movement-related wrinkles do not all have the same cause. An examination helps identify which concern is actually driving the appearance you want to change.

Radiesse and Sculptra should not be selected solely because both are called collagen stimulators. The material, treatment area, amount and injection approach matter. A provider should explain why a specific product fits your goal and what it will not address.

If your main concern is skin texture or an acne-scar discussion, our guide to microneedling and collagen induction therapy explains a different mechanism. Microneedling does not replace injectable volume. The comparison helps you ask a more precise question; it is not a recommendation to substitute one procedure for another.

How quickly will you see a change?

Radiesse’s gel carrier contributes volume at treatment, while the longer-term response develops over time. Sculptra is generally discussed as a gradual treatment rather than an instant-volume result. Early swelling can make an immediate appearance misleading after either treatment.

Ask when the provider will assess the result, whether a series is recommended, and what maintenance could involve. Product information and published timelines are useful context, but they cannot predict exactly how your face will respond. Avoid planning an important event around a promised result date.

How should you compare the cost?

A syringe price and a vial price do not describe equivalent treatment plans. Total cost depends on the product, amount, areas treated and number of appointments. Ask for a written explanation of the proposed plan rather than comparing the smallest number on two menus.

Use the current Express Med Spa menu for listed services and confirm a personalized quote with staff. This article does not publish a Sculptra price or imply that both products are available at every Express Med Spa clinic.

Risks and reversibility deserve a direct conversation

Swelling, bruising, tenderness and redness can occur after filler treatment. Lumps, nodules, infection and delayed reactions are also possible. The FDA identifies accidental injection into a blood vessel as a serious risk that can cause tissue damage, vision loss or stroke.

CaHA and PLLA products are not reversed in the same way as a hyaluronic acid filler. Ask how the provider manages an unsatisfactory result or a complication before treatment. Do not assume that every filler can simply be dissolved.

Seek immediate medical attention for vision changes or stroke-like symptoms after a filler injection. Unexpected severe pain or concerning skin color changes also require urgent assessment. Follow the specific emergency instructions supplied by your treating provider.

Questions for your consultation

  • Am I trying to address volume, contour, texture or muscle movement?
  • Which exact product are you recommending, and why?
  • Is the proposed treatment area within that product’s labeling?
  • What changes are realistic, and when will you review them?
  • What are the alternatives, costs and complication-management arrangements?

Frequently asked questions

Is Radiesse better than Sculptra?

There is no universal winner. Product material, treatment area, timing, medical history and the desired change determine which options deserve consideration.

Can Radiesse or Sculptra be dissolved like an HA filler?

Neither is a hyaluronic acid filler. They are not dissolved in the same way as HA products, so discuss reversibility and complication management before treatment.

Does Express Med Spa offer Sculptra?

This comparison does not establish availability. The current menu lists Radiesse; ask your chosen clinic which products are currently offered.
