Jaw Slimming & TMJ Relief

Masseter Botox

Masseter Botox is one treatment with two very different payoffs. By relaxing the masseter, the large muscle at the angle of your jaw, a few precise injections can soften a wide, square jawline into a smoother contour, and they can ease the tension, soreness, and teeth grinding that come with an overworked jaw. At Express Med Spa we treat the masseter with Botox or Xeomin, matched to your goals, and we will be honest about what to expect: results are temporary, the slimming effect builds over a few weeks, and dosing is individualized. Every plan starts with a free consultation with Stefanie Drozd, MSN, APRN.

RESULTS TIMELINE

The slimming effect is gradual because it tracks the muscle shrinking: most people see the change develop over about three to six weeks rather than overnight. Relief from tension, clenching, and grinding can be felt sooner.

Result Last

Results are temporary. For most people, masseter treatment lasts around three to six months, after which the muscle gradually regains activity and a repeat treatment is scheduled to maintain the result. With consistent treatment, some patients find the muscle stays smaller and they can space sessions further apart.

BEST FOR

A wide or square jaw driven by an enlarged masseter muscle; teeth grinding (bruxism); jaw clenching; jaw tension and related headaches

About This Treatment

What is Masseter Botox?

What is masseter Botox?

The masseter is the thick muscle you can feel flex when you clench your teeth. When it is overdeveloped, from genetics, chronic clenching, or grinding, it can widen the lower face and contribute to jaw tension and headaches. Masseter Botox is a small series of injections of a neuromodulator into that muscle. The neuromodulator temporarily reduces the muscle's ability to contract at full force, so over the following weeks the masseter works less, relaxes, and gradually decreases in size.

Botox or Xeomin: which neuromodulator?

Both Botox and Xeomin are FDA-approved neuromodulators that work in a very similar way, and Express Med Spa offers both for the masseter. Xeomin is a "pure" formulation without the accompanying proteins found in some other products, which is why some patients prefer it. Neither is better for everyone. At your consultation, Stefanie Drozd, MSN, APRN will recommend the product and dose that fit your muscle and your goals.

Masseter Botox for jaw and face slimming

If your goal is a slimmer, softer lower face, masseter treatment can help when a strong or square jaw is driven by an enlarged muscle rather than by bone. As the treated muscle relaxes and reduces over several weeks, the angle of the jaw softens and the face can look narrower and more tapered. Because the change tracks the muscle shrinking, it is gradual: most people see the effect develop over three to six weeks rather than overnight, and it is maintained with repeat treatments.

It is worth knowing what this treatment is not. A neuromodulator slims the masseter; it does not add structure. If your goal is to build or sharpen the jawline rather than soften it, that is a job for a dermal filler, which adds volume, and the two are sometimes combined. We will tell you honestly which approach, or which combination, actually fits your face.

Masseter Botox for TMJ, teeth grinding and jaw clenching

The same muscle relaxation that slims the jaw can also relieve a very common set of problems. If you grind or clench your teeth (bruxism), wake with a sore jaw or headaches, or have jaw tension linked to TMJ, calming the masseter can reduce the force it generates and ease those symptoms for many people. It can also protect against some of the wear that grinding puts on your teeth.

Here is our honest position. Botox and Xeomin are widely used for TMJ tension, clenching, and grinding, and many patients get real relief, but this is an off-label use and it is not an FDA-approved cure for TMJ disorder. It treats the muscle, not the joint itself. Severe, structural, or worsening TMJ, and significant grinding, often need a dentist or orofacial-pain specialist as well, who may recommend a night guard or a dental evaluation. We are glad to be part of that plan, and we offer trigger point injections for related muscle tension. We will refer you when a dentist should be involved.

Is it Botox or filler? Jaw slimming versus jaw building

This is the most common point of confusion, so it is worth being clear. A neuromodulator (Botox or Xeomin) relaxes the masseter to make a strong jaw smaller and softer. A dermal filler does the opposite: it adds volume to build, define, or sharpen the jawline and chin. One slims, the other builds. Some people use a combination to both soften an overdeveloped muscle and refine the contour, and the right answer depends entirely on your anatomy and your goal. Your provider will walk you through it at the free consultation.

How many units, and how long does it last?

There is no single right number of units, because the masseter varies a lot in size and strength from person to person, and the dose for slimming versus tension relief can differ too. That is why we assess your muscle in person and tailor the dose rather than quote a fixed number online. Be cautious of any provider promising a one-size-fits-all amount.

Results are temporary. Most people find that masseter treatment lasts around three to six months, after which the muscle gradually regains its activity and a repeat treatment is scheduled to maintain the result. With consistent treatment over time, some patients find the muscle stays smaller and they can space sessions further apart.

Who Masseter Botox is For

Good Candidates? Is This Right for You?

Who masseter Botox helps. The best candidates have a wide or square lower face driven by an overdeveloped masseter muscle rather than by bone, or they grind or clench their teeth, wake with a sore jaw or headaches, or have jaw tension linked to TMJ. Relaxing the masseter can soften the jaw contour and reduce the force the muscle generates. Every plan is confirmed in person by Stefanie Drozd, MSN, APRN.

When it may not be the right fit. If a strong jawline is driven by bone structure rather than muscle, a neuromodulator will not change it, and if your goal is to build or sharpen the jawline rather than soften it, that is a job for a dermal filler. Botox and Xeomin for TMJ, teeth grinding, and jaw clenching are off-label uses and are not an FDA-approved cure for TMJ disorder; severe, structural, or worsening cases often need a dentist or orofacial-pain specialist as well. Your provider will tell you honestly whether masseter treatment fits your goals.

Contraindications & Risks / Side Effects

Contraindications
Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
A known allergy to botulinum toxin or to any ingredient in the product.
Active skin infection or inflamed skin at the injection sites.
Certain neuromuscular disorders (for example myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome) — discuss your full history with your provider at your consultation.
Severe, structural, or worsening TMJ disorder, which may need a dentist or orofacial-pain specialist rather than, or in addition to, a neuromodulator.

Risks / Side Effects

Mild, temporary soreness, redness, or bruising at the injection sites.
A brief sense of chewing fatigue in the first week or two while the muscle adjusts.
Because the masseter sits near muscles used for smiling and chewing, imprecise placement can briefly affect your smile or bite — which is why an experienced injector and correct technique matter.
Results are temporary and dosing is individualized; the slimming effect builds gradually and may take more than one treatment to reach your goal.
